We recently connected with Luke Carlsen and have shared our conversation below.
Luke , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Have you signed with an agent or manager? Why or why not?
I think the best way to get an agent is to ask your friends that are already represented if they can give you some referrals. If you like your friend’s work and you trust them, ask them what reps they have had and who they currently have. That’s how I have gotten my agents. Also, some music agents have reached out to me since I have been at it for a few years. I find these agents are usually good. Just do good work, and you will get noticed.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into music right after college. I went to Chapman University, and the mayor of Orange also happened to be the director of the Catholic Charities of Orange County. She is a wonderful woman and Chapman recommended me to be her band on a private event. Since then, we started booking a bunch of private gigs and that was really my first intro into getting regular gigs. Just like in sales, you get referrals in music.
I got into acting after I was invited to appear on HBO’s Perry Mason as a jazz singer in the first episode. Since then, I got into classes and started appearing in minor roles and commercials.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think NFTs are a scam and waste of money.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
In some ways, it very much is a business and job like any other. However, the difficulty is finding and creating work. At a job, you don’t necessarily have to create your own path and own work. That can be difficult for non-creatives to understand.
