We were lucky to catch up with Luke Brenes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Luke, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
For me, learning how to make the electronic music I was interested in required hours of observation, trial & error, and online videos/guides that helped me get familiar with the necessary softwares. Pretty much the familiar story of “locking yourself in your room and being obsessed hours on end.” Starting out, I definitely wasn’t putting out the content that I am today. Shortly, after recognizing the gap in production quality between the music I was putting out and the music I was listening to; it became a challenge to one up the previous release with every new song I finished.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As an introduction, I’m a DJ/Producer from New Orleans now living in Arizona. My releases range from Dubstep and Trap music all the way to House music. Starting out around 10 years ago, I was too young to be involved in the events/nightlife that really were the key ways of showcasing yourself and networking. I then spent the next few years really looking to improve my sound and production. After playing my first few shows in my hometown I had recognized the opportunities that lie ahead outside of my hometown. After moving, I was able to surround myself with the peers that I had looked up to and gained much more knowledge on production and more insight on this industry.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Something that helped me build an audience on social media is understanding that your music is a product and people always want a face to the product. Also, as a musician, I had to understand where my social media audience would have to come from. So I would offer my songs as free downloads with the exception of a follow on social media. It’s only a win-win.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to share the music I’ve spent so long putting together has to be the most rewarding aspect, whether it’s a live reaction or a comment left on a release. Although I always prioritize making music for myself and what I enjoy, there really isn’t a better feeling if somebody else can get something out of it as well.
