We recently connected with Luiza Barteldes and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Luiza thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
I was a ballet dancer living in New York City in the early 2000s. After working with different jobs from a pet care business to real estate, I decided to apply my dancing background in something movement related. I considered personal training and yoga, until I found pilates. I knew this lady from ballet class who was a pilates instructor. Her name was Pam Pardi. Little did I know, she was a well respected teacher who trained under Roman’a Kryzanowska, Joseph Pilates only protege. So Pam took me under her wing and I was accepted in the True Pilates certification program. They were in the original studio founded by Joseph Pilates. They still had some of the equipment he built and also his original students! It was the real deal. I was very lucky to train there. After 9 months, I completed my final tests and became a certified pilates instructor!

Luiza, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After getting certified, I was offered a position in a studio in Chicago. I moved from NYC, and I worked there for seven years, until they suddenly closed doors. I decided to open my own studio to be able to continue working with my clients. I only had a few weeks to buy equipment and find a space. I was also 8 months pregnant! It was very challenging but it turned out really well!
I ran my studio – the Pilates Loft Of Chicago for two years, when I decided to move to North Carolina searching for warmer climates!
I now have a home based pilates studio. It’s very private and cozy. I work with clients one on one offering a very personalized service.
I worked with people from many walks of life. Elderly, athletes, artists, pregnant women, kids, dancers, NBA players, cancer survivors, businessmen and women, just to name a few.
I have experience with many injuries and conditions including back issues, herniated disks, hip and knee replacements, osteoporosis, osteopenia, EDS, pelvic floor dysfunction, and more.
I am very proud of keeping a list of long term clients who became friends. I truly enjoy helping people to move better and feel their best!

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Understanding people’s personalities and adapting to their needs. The same injury might not look the same in different people. What works for someone might not work for others. The instructor must listen to their client with an open mind and be ready to experiment with care.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I try to make my sessions happy and light, while also challenging. I am not overly strict. It’s just exercise, not a cult! Pilates is also so fun and guess what?! Laughing works the abdominal muscles!
