Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Luiz Prado. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Luiz, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I belive that every step in my previous endeavours leaded me to where I am today, I don’t know what impact it would have on my creative drive if I did not learned the lessons I did with previous experiences, the bad and the good ones, for insteance I’m graduated in civil engineering and worked as a project developer for houses and buldings for 5 years, in those years I had the guidance of a great supervisor who taught valuable lessons not only for my career on how to deal with different personalities of clients but how to manage finaces, how to invest my time in creative pursuits, how to be patience, how to deal with work/liofe balance. Those lessons I brought on to my career after as a freelance artist . I don’t know if I would have the tough skin I had when doing tricky freelance art assigments in the beginning if it wasn’t for my previous years spent in anothe field. I could have just given up If not for those lessons knowing how to roll with the punches and persevere
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am currently a freelance artist and creative developer working on concept art for miniatures, book covers and ilustrations and comics, say currently because I never know where my skills will lead me in my pursuit to develop creative projects and I’m always open for growth. like I said I was a project developer for houses and buildings, working on CAD softwares mostly but I always felt like there wasnt too much creativity envolved into that career , every time I tried to exercise some more daring architectural expression, the structural engineer would deny it and tell me that “engineers build boxes we don’t take risks on daring and time consuming builds” or something to that effect, so I saw myself ocasionally going back to drawing in my spare times to let go some of my creative drive. then when I realise , all of my notebooks were filled with sketches so that cause a light to go on and i decided to try and see if I could make art as my career , at first in my night time from like 7pm until midnight or until I would fall on the desk, but when I felt that I was having more love and excitment for my art than for the concstruction projects I decided to take the jump
That beginning I will tell you, worst year of my life, Always some unexpected issue waiting on the corner to happen, and with freelancing came the uncertain of money flow every month , but that happened just until I could have some stable contracts and started working on constant projects for RPGs and self publishers . I can tell that communication is the key in every career, knowing how to conduct a business transaction, how to sell your ideas and the solutions that only you can provide and how to be able to respond efficiently to unexpected issues, how to manage your responsabilities. To keep awareness of what is expected of you and be able to deliver and how to better make use of my skills in order to do so it is what I always keep in my mind when performing my skills to a project
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
for me its to always try to become a better version of myself, not only in my skills but as a person. I’m not competing with my fellow artists, I’m competing with my younger version that stablished a goal and hoped one day to achieve great milestones and he is now looking at and me and inquirying if I’m doing the things I said I would. When i’m working on a artwork I’m always trying to improve on my skill and I do that by asking myself if what i currently have in front of me matches what my greatest inspirying artists did and how can I come to that level
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
First, I wish I had wake up earlier to the idea that you can and you should allow yourself to pursuit what makes your creative drive go foward, I wish I knew earlier that there are plenty of tutorials and tips available online either that be through Gumroad, youtube Twitch etc, and that some great teachers are there on the reach , also the artist community is very open, pretty much everytime I ask for feedbacks, tips or guidance I will get lots and lots of insight and thats something that I am very happy to be a part of and to contribute.
