We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Luisa Pascual. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Luisa below.
Hi Luisa , thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am happy as an independent creative artist. I really can’t imagine being an employee, having a schedule, going to the same place doing the same thing every day. It has only crossed my mind when business is not going well, but in reality it is not a good option for me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I can say that I was born an artist, I am Dominican, I have done art all my life since I was in school, my high school was specialized in arts and my university career too, I moved to New York 10 years ago and started as a professional makeup artist in the industry, with the arrival of COVID we stayed at home and what was a hobby became my main business, making art and crafts expressing the culture of the Dominican Republic and it arose because I like to make things with my hands to give away, with that I give people the opportunity to give away unique handmade and personalized things! I am proud to be a reference of the Dominican culture in this area and that people already recognize my work style.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The freedom to express myself through what I do and the responses of people when they receive something I made with my hands, producing in them unforgettable emotions that are connected to their childhood memories and with loved ones.
The nostalgia that my art awakens for our homeland in those of us who live far from it, my art helps those who buy it to feel a little closer to our land. That fills me with satisfaction.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I think that all of us human beings here right now are survivors of a pandemic. It was perhaps the most challenging test we have ever experienced. I survived thanks to my faith and art. It was therapeutic. I have had to recover from serious health problems and financial setbacks, reinvent my means of creating income at a time when we were all isolated. In some way, isolation became an opportunity for me. People couldn’t go out and buy a gift. I became an intermediary. Today I can look back and say that it was a test that helped me grow as a person and as an artist. I discovered that I am capable of much more.
