Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Luisa Mejia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Luisa, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Well that’s one of the funniest things about my company. I’am not only the founder of Louis Barx but also the fashion designer, marketing strategist, salesperson, shipping and packaging supervisor and the list goes on, so I decided to use my name because I am the designer and usually most of the luxurious fashion designer in the world use their names, so why not me? Louis is a name that could be easily pronounced in most languages and since I’ve always thought about my brand as a one with a potential to reach international markets it’s a good idea to have a good name. I also knew that because is a pet related brand it would be a good idea to include something that would be related to dogs or dog owners. Now the “Barx” word came to my mind inspired by a major women’s undergarment brand which I’m a fan of and basically I just changed the “ks” sound in the word “Barks” for the X letter to make it fun, easy to remember and of course…unique. That’s how the name Louis Barx came up.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Luisa Mejia and I’m the founder of Louis Barx, a brand dedicated to empower pet owners and their pets through elevated and colorful pet supplies. I grew up in a house with pets of all kinds; dogs, cats, birds and small reptiles, so I knew from the very beginning that I wanted to create a pet related and also an empowering and inspiring brand. As a female-founded small business, the brand is also on a mission to empower fellow female entrepreneurs.
Our main objective as a company is to bring happiness to dogs and their owners by designing beautiful, timeless and practical pet supplies at accessible prices. The company’s premium pet supplies are known for their quality fabrics, aesthetics and durability, from collars, leashes, toys, sweaters, and more. Each piece is designed to highlight the special and unique “family members” that pets become. I believe that what sets Louis Barx from others is our unique brand essence and the story behind the company. The modern consumer is constantly looking with brands with a soul and a purpose and that is what we have at Louis Barx.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Sitting on a chair in my dining room, with many dreams and a green notebook full of ideas and bad drawings, unemployed, worried about debts and not a penny to invest, it’s how I started Louis Barx.
I don’t think I’am different from other young people who want to start their own business, the difference is that I decided to make HUGE changes in my life and leave my “comfort zone” to reach my goals. I sold some personal items and my husband and grandmother gave me $6000 to invest in my crazy business idea.
I’ve done other business attempts that were not successful and still never gave up my idea of becoming an entrepreneur. From funding and language boundaries to huge competition and lack of design knowledge, I could mention countless challenges that didn’t stop me from pursuing my dreams.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
I must say that I’am terrible at drawing, painting or anything art related, I have the ideas in my mind but it is really hard for me to put them on paper so from the beginning I knew that even though they were my ideas I would have to find someone else that would help me to bring them to reality. I spent considerable time finding the right people to help shape my ideas and also people who would bring my designs to life or manufacture the final product. From the beginning I focused on looking for partners who were focused on customer service and quality, since that is exactly what I deliver to my end customers. As an entrepreneur you always have to carry out all the functions in your company, but it is essential to identify that area in which you do not have expertise and look for the right people that will support you with that specific task. If you’re not good at sales, look for a salesperson, if you have good ideas but you’re bad at drawing then look for a graphic designer and so on, I think communication is basic to get the results you expect. I have learned to delegate functions and accept that I can’t do everything for my business.
