We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Luisa Azevedo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Luisa below.
Luisa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Thank you for the opportunity to talk about the importance of meaningful projects and storytelling as an actor. Acting is definitely a way to connect to people on a deeper level and its one of the reasons that I feel in love with the whole filmmaking and acting world. I’ve been fortunate to be part of projects that have allowed me to tell amazing stories and one project that stands out to me right now is ‘’Wishiful Thinking’’, because we just had the world premiere of this film on July 15th. I saw it for the first time and I was really emotional and glad to be a part of it. In this project we got to tell Rodrigo’s story, he is the director and he’s also acting on it, and it is a love letter that he made to share his truth with his family and being part of it helping him telling this story in a such beautiful and fun way, it was an honor. I am sure that a lot of people are gonna relate to this film and that brings me so much joy because I want to be part of stories that inspire empathy, and make a difference in the lives of the audience and ‘’Wishiful Thinking’’ will leave a positive mark and will inspire everyone that watches it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was born and raised in Bahia, Brasil and growing up I’ve always loved anything related to art, I grew up performing in the stage, dancing, and eventually theatre came in my life as well. At first, it was because it was fun, exciting and it was so good for my soul and body but with time I notice the power of art and how it can resonate with someone and evoke emotions, so that motivated me to study even more about the acting world.
I moved to California em 2021 and I kept studying in a conservatory here in Los Angeles. In this time I started to be part of incredible projects and I was constantly on sets working. I feel like as an actor, I learned discipline a lot, because I have to bring discipline and a deep commitment to my work. I strive to immerse myself in the characters I portray, exploring their motivations, emotions, complexities and to be honest I absolutely love all of that. I got to be part of projects that had incredible stories and made into festivals. I also produced a film for the first time this year and it was challenging, but being more involved in the process of organizing and getting everything together in the pre production made me a lot more passionate about making a movie and right now I am so excited about the future projects I will be a part of and I can’t wait to share with everyone.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One important lesson that I had to unlearn its a cliche one, but it is the belief that problems are always negative. In the pre production of ‘’Adeus’’ the first film that I produced with a friend of mine we faced some challenged and unexpected issues, when we thought everything was good to go another problem came in the way like the equipment, the place, the budget, so many things that could go wrong and initially, I saw these problems as setbacks and felt frustrated by the obstacles, because it became evident that things wouldn’t go as smoothly as we had envisioned. But if it wasn’t for those things that went wrong the project wound’t came out as good as it is, because by changing things, embracing the problems and reframing them as opportunities, we got the best shots and in fact, some of the most innovative and memorable moments in the film were born out of these challenges. Also, I discovered that they pushed me to grow both personally and professionally. And of course problems are gonna happen because it’s part of the journey but my mindset now is completely different and I learned to embrace the unexpected.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I am a huge reader, pretty much any opportunity to talk about books and I’m there. Most of the books that I read are fictions, but they do teach me so much about life and makes me way more empathetic towards the world. One book that change my life and that I read right after I moved to the US was ”Just Kids” by Patti Smith. From the very first pages I just felt so inspired and wanted to completely change my life and be myself a 100% always. The way Patti Smith tells her story living in New York, sharing her journey is so beautiful and so true to herself that really gave me a lot of self acceptance towards myself and the motivation that you can always be creating.
