We recently connected with Luis Marrero and have shared our conversation below.
Luis, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
I’ve always had a deep love for cooking. Some of my earliest memories are in the kitchen with my mom, standing on a chair flipping grilled cheese sandwiches like it was the most important job in the world. Growing up in a military family meant a lot of moving around and having to grow up quickly, but the kitchen was always my safe place—it grounded me.
Baseball was my first passion. I had dreams, a full-ride scholarship, and a future laid out—until injury changed that path. It was devastating, but it also led me back to where my heart had always been: food, culture, family. Being both Puerto Rican and Mexican, I was blessed with the best of both worlds—bold flavors, tradition, love in every bite.
Then I met my wife. She shared that same fire, that same ambition, and she’s been my rock ever since. We’ve built a life together, raised three amazing kids, and believe it or not—they were the ones who really pushed us to chase this dream. They believed in us when we were too tired, too scared, or too overwhelmed to believe in ourselves.
This journey we’re on? It’s about honoring where we come from, pouring love into what we do, and passing it forward—one dish, one story at a time.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve loved cooking for as long as I can remember. Growing up in the kitchen alongside my mom, some of my earliest memories are of making simple things like grilled cheese sandwiches—but it wasn’t just about the food, it was about the time spent together. I come from a Puerto Rican and Mexican background, so I was lucky to be raised around incredible flavors and a rich food culture.
My family was military, so I learned independence early, but I always had the support of my parents in everything I pursued. My first passion was baseball, and I earned a full ride to college for it, but an injury changed that path. It was a tough moment, but it gave me the chance to turn back to my other passion—cooking.
When I met my wife, I knew I had found someone with the same fire and ambition. She’s been my backbone ever since, and we’ve built a life and a dream together. We have three amazing kids who not only supported us every step of the way—they were the ones who inspired us to chase this culinary journey. Their belief in us was the push we needed to take the leap.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Then came the day I met my wife. We were just teenagers hanging out at the mall, and honestly, it was love. There was something about her energy, her passion—it matched mine in a way I’d never felt before. That day changed my life. She’s been my partner in everything since—my rock, my biggest supporter, and my inspiration. We discovered early on that we shared a love for food and the same drive to build something meaningful.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
At first, it was a side hustle—late nights, weekend gigs, whatever we could take on while still holding down full-time jobs and raising our three kids. But what’s crazy is that it was actually our kids who pushed us to take the leap. They saw something in us—maybe the fire, maybe the love—and they told us, “You’ve got to go all in.”
So we did. It wasn’t easy. It was a lot of sacrifice, a lot of learning, but also the most fulfilling decision we’ve ever made. Turning our side hustle into our full-time life didn’t just change our careers—it brought our whole family closer, and turned our passion into purpose.
