We recently connected with Ludivine Gérard and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Ludivine thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I took a risk coming to Colorado to start a new life with my husband and son. I have been an artist since childhood, having studied visual arts and painting, but I never managed to break through in my field in Belgium— where art is away of countryside community concern . Life led me to the construction industry, which allowed me to build a stable life in Belgium. However, through my travels to the USA, I felt a connection here that I never experienced in Belgium. On a “why not” impulse, we decided to leave everything behind and come here to start a business. We opened a studio where my husband can continue his professional work as an illustrator and creator of 3D renderings for designers, architects and builders. As for me, I found a painting studio where I can express myself and finally dare to be who I am, with the possibility of even thinking about exhibiting my work again.
Ludivine, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We felt the need to shift our careers, which had been primarily commercial until now, towards roles that would highlight our creative skills even more. With my knowledge of the construction industry, I saw potential here in high-end architecture. My husband creates 3D renderings, narrative images that depict people’s lives in new constructions set against spectacular environments. I brought market knowledge and a network to my husband, which helped him develop services for builders, landscapers, and architects.
About
Tandem Studio is a mixed arts workspace that produces 3D renderings, graphic design and illustration. Our artistic approach blends European roots with American West fascination.
3D visualization allows for the detailed visualization of the building, interior decoration choices, and landscaping before construction begins. It’s a pre-construction projection.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Studies forged our artistical culture basement but we would have liked our art studies to delve deeper into both experimentation and technique. We filled our education gaps in involoving ourselves in commercial carreers. We were not expected for our artiscal skills but our creativity and sense of observation made our success. Traveling the West USA sparked-upthe dream to re-invent our family lifestyle and re-focus our career. I’m proud to be a self made woman that moved her boys to Colorado.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In our commercial careers, we had no more room for growth, and we wanted to return to our artistic path. Both graduates of prestigious art schools in Belgium, we decided to make use of our education! My husband studied comics and illustration, and I studied painting and graphic design. Instead of relegating the artistic world to the background, we decided to make it our full-time careers as a family. We created Tandem Studio, and Colorado seemed the obvious choice for our second life journey. It’s our favorite state in the USA, perfect for enjoying magnificent landscapes and a rich and varied social and cultural life.
