We were lucky to catch up with Lucy Sprinkle recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lucy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My love for photography started when I realized how much I enjoyed capturing moments and turning ideas into something visual. Most of what I know came from hours of watching YouTube tutorials and experimenting until I got the shots I wanted! I taught myself how to edit and fine-tuned my style over time. Patience has definitely been one of the most important skills I’ve learned, especially when teaching myself everything from scratch. If I could’ve sped up the process, I probably would’ve sought out mentors or hands-on workshops earlier on. One of the biggest obstacles I faced was the cost of equipment. Building up my collection slowly over time was a challenge, but it also taught me to be resourceful and make the most of what I had!

Lucy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a photographer based in both Oxford, Mississippi, and Tampa, Florida, specializing in capturing genuine moments, whether it’s sports, portraits, or everyday life. My photography journey began at a young age after attending a film camp where I discovered my love for storytelling through visuals. Later, I got my first camera, a Nikon D3300, and taught myself everything I could through YouTube videos and a lot of trial and error. That early curiosity quickly grew into a passion, and by the time I got to college, I knew I wanted to turn photography into something bigger. Right now, I work with the Daily Mississippian photographing events, sports, and campus life at Ole Miss, while also running my own photography business. I offer portrait sessions, event coverage, and creative shoots, focusing on images that feel natural, polished, and full of personality! What sets me apart is how I connect with my clients, I want every shoot to feel comfortable, fun, and true to who they are. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come by teaching myself and continuing to grow creatively. I want people to know that every photo I take is backed by passion and purpose. My goal is to make each client feel seen and confident, and to capture moments they’ll love looking back on for years to come!

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has definitely been my friends and the support they’ve shown me! A lot of my business started by taking photos of my friends, and once I posted those sessions, more people began reaching out after seeing my work online. Word of mouth and referrals have been huge, along with building a consistent social media presence! I also try to take on as many jobs as I can to gain exposure and connect with new people who might become future clients.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of being a photographer especially in sports, is getting that “wow” shot. There’s nothing like capturing a split-second moment that perfectly tells the story of the game. Beyond sports, I love freezing time and giving people something they can look back on forever! Seeing my photos bring out real emotion, whether it’s pride, nostalgia, or joy, means everything to me. Another really rewarding part is seeing my work published. Knowing that my photos are being shared with a wider audience and help tell stories through the Daily Mississippian or other outlets makes all the hard work worth it.
