We recently connected with Lucy Saltmarsh and have shared our conversation below.
Lucy, appreciate you joining us today. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents have done a lot of things right, but the thing I’m most grateful for is the belief they instilled in me that, “I can do anything if I try hard enough”. They signed me up for everything as a kid – soccer, gymnastics, ballet, tennis, basketball, swimming, and so much more. This taught me to be adaptable and learn to thrive in a multitude of environments. Some of the activities I was a part of were team oriented where I learned to communicate with others and some of them were individual sports where I learned about the value of positive self-talk. Because of this, I am comfortable both leading a team as well as creating individually without the input of others. I also got the added benefit as a teenager of watching my dad shift from working in a corporate setting to working in small business and building something that he was passionate about. This has forever fueled my passion for working with small businesses and their owners and why MVMT Marketing exclusively works with companies who have under 50 employees!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I believe the most effective strategy for growing your clientele is two-fold – rooting into your company’s values & driving brand awareness. First, we ensure that we are embodying our company’s values and enacting in all aspects of business. For MVMT Marketing, that means utilizing authentic communication. This looks like overly communicating with clients, partners, and vendors around timelines, design, and expected results so that the job is done properly the first time. We always strive to create with the baseline understanding of the blood, sweat, and tears that the owners’ who employ us have put into their own business. The second part is then turning current clients into a referral source for new clients. I’ve found that small business owners, in particular, like to work with other small business owners. The more we are able to help grow a business’s probability and visibility, the more likely we are to receive work from other businesses in the community.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Jocko Willink has a motivational speech titled “Good”, on YouTube, that has significantly impacted my way of entrepreneurial thinking. For those unfamiliar, Jocko was a Navy Seal Lieutenant commander, and anytime one of his subordinates would bring an issue to him, he would simply respond “good” before reframing the problem as an opportunity. When a mission got canceled, he responded “good – more time to get better”. That is the basis of our thinking at MVMT Marketing. If a post doesn’t perform the way we expect it to, for example, we do not get upset. We simply try to objectively understand why it underperformed and then use the data to iterate and make it better. If a client does not love the first draft of a design we send over, we simply say “good – we have an opportunity to try something new that they had not even considered.” Small business ownership can be stressful, as you will often wear many hats, however, it is incredibly rewarding. There is something to learn from every project and every client that we work with. I feel incredibly lucky to get to wake up and passionately create each day.
