We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lucy Nicandri. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lucy below.
Lucy, appreciate you joining us today. How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
My first job was in a local hospital working in the dietary department. Before the age that I could legally work, I volunteered as a candy striper and also volunteered my time for several causes and fundraisers which has carried through my life to the present day. Upon graduating from college, I went to work as an administrative assistant at a bank always finding myself taking the lead on organizing special events and working on marketing/promotional materials. My goals were to make a difference in the lives of others. During my banking career, I volunteered to organize the United Way Campaign, which got me into the non-profit field. When the bank merged, it was a perfect opportunity for me to switch from the corporate workplace to the non-profit field. I was nervous because United Way of Sarasota County hired me as a Major Gifts Officer. I had no experience in this area but learned quickly that my personality and passion for helping others was all I needed. The recruiting process back then was all based on simple applications and reference checks. After working with United Way in various positions, I ended up as the Vice President of Marketing and Events. After 13 great years, I went to work for another non-profit in the same capacity for five years, before accepting the title of Executive Director at Suncoast Charities for Children where I am currently employed. I am extremely happy I ended up where I did for my first job.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The non-profit organization I work for raises funding from special event fundraisers for six local non-profit organizations providing critical programs and services to children, teens, and adults with special needs. I am very proud of the work I do to help individuals create a better life for themselves and be independent. I not only get to organize event fundraisers but also actively engage in the needs assessment and outcome measurement process for each of these agencies where I can see firsthand the needs and how our fundraising support is making a positive impact. Just some of the programs and services include early education, developmental therapies, life skills training, and family advocacy & family strengthening services.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had to pivot throughout my entire career, and even difficult decisions during times of change, always seemed to work out for the better. My biggest pivot was when I transitioned from a corporate job into the non-profit field. After 13 wonderful years with United Way of Sarasota County, I experienced a total reorganization into a regional office and downsizing, which led me to work at The Florida Center for Early Childhood. After five years there, a CEO change occurred and my position faced being eliminated due to budget constraints, which brought me to my current job position. Despite unexpected and challenging career changes over the years, I have gained valuable knowledge. I continually ask myself if my current job is aligned with the legacy that I want to make for myself. If not, then it is time to pivot. Sometimes things change you cannot control. However, by keeping an open mind and accepting the things you cannot change, pivoting in your career can be easier than you think.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Being compassionate and having a strong passion to make a difference in helping others is key to succeeding in my field of non-profit work. When you are fundraising you cannot get discouraged by potential sponsors/donors saying “no” – you need to keep going knowing that for every “no” there is a “yes” around the corner.
