We recently connected with Lucy Lawrence and have shared our conversation below.
Lucy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was a high school senior, determined to graduate high school with my associate’s degree. I was taking a bunch of random classes, one being a media class. We were assigned to do a media project and work on it over the class. I decided to do a makeup page on Instagram, where I posted an editorial makeup look every week. During this same time, I also found my long-term interest in photography growing. I liked to do makeup looks, and then do a little photo shoot with them. My sister Lily was most helpful, as she always agreed to let me practice on her. As I worked on these projects, I started to love the idea of doing these kinds of things as a job- photography, makeup, and content creation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I do a little bit of photography and a little bit of beauty-related content creation. @lucyjayne.photo & @lucyjaynemua & @lucyyyjayne (TT).
When it comes to photography, I like to keep it natural but still look pretty. Nowadays photos are so filtered and it doesn’t feel authentic to me. Again with authenticity, I like to capture authentic moments, which is why I enjoy event photography. I have my first retreat coming up this October that I am photographing, and I’m excited to capture people pushing their limits and trying new things!
When it comes to makeup, I like to do super simple looks and super extra looks. My personality is pretty extra- Barbie style was my thing before it was on trend. But there are also days that I like to stick with the classics like T-shirts and jeans. I like to keep my makeup photos completely unedited, again with authenticity, because I feel like it’s more relatable. I feel like my purpose is to help people, and that manifests in all parts of my life, including makeup. I like to teach people makeup and show them that they can do anything I can do, and more. If I edit the photos, it gives them unrealistic expectations of what makeup REALLY looks like. I want to help people feel beautiful, even unedited.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative worker is that my job is something I love, so each day I work I feel excited about life, not drained. I have worked corporate jobs, and they don’t light a fire in me like creative work. In a way, working is an outlet for me. I love seeing my ideas and creations come to life, even if they aren’t perfect.
Have you ever had to pivot?
After I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in December of 2022, I started looking for corporate jobs. I was SO excited to get into the working world and be done with school. This year I’ve gone through two corporate jobs, neither of which was a good fit. I was always short of things to do and at times treated poorly by my bosses. I was scared, but I took the leap and switched out of corporate work. I worked full-time through college, and until April 2023, so changing my mind about what I’d always done was a scary step for me. But I’ve found that I am having the most fun and positive summer that I’ve ever had because I decided to switch to the creative work that fuels my fire.
