We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lucy Adikwu. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lucy below.
Lucy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about growing your team – how did you recruit the first few people, what was the process like, how’d you go about training and if you were to start over today would you have done anything differently?
Starting a business is an exciting journey, and building a team is crucial for the success of your project.
In the initial phase, you will likely wear many hats and juggle various responsibilities. It’s important to identify the key skills and roles needed to achieve your project goals. This involves mapping out your desired outcomes and working backward to determine the necessary competencies.
Look for individuals who not only possess the required skills but also align with your vision and values. Hiring for attitude and potential can sometimes be more beneficial than focusing solely on experience.
I leverage personal networks, attend industry events, and use social media platforms to connect with potential team members.
The interview process for team hires can be more informal and flexible. It often includes multiple rounds of conversations to ensure a good fit.
Recruiting and building a team is an ongoing process that evolves with the different stages of your projects. Each step, from the first hire to expanding your team, helps bring your project to life.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During the Planning of one of my films, I faced a significant challenge that tested my resilience. I was working on film projects that were deeply personal to me, focusing on Sickle Cell Management. Midway through production, we encountered a major setback: our primary funding source pulled out unexpectedly, leaving us with a substantial financial gap.
Determined not to let this derail the project, I took several steps to overcome the obstacle:
Crowdfunding Campaign: I launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise the necessary funds. This involved creating compelling content to share our story and vision with potential backers. The response was overwhelming, and we managed to raise a significant portion of the needed funds.
Community Support: I reached out to local businesses and community leaders who believed in the project’s mission. Their support, both financial and in-kind, played a crucial role in keeping the project alive.
Creative Solutions: We had to get creative with our resources. This meant finding cost-effective ways to shoot and edit the film without compromising on quality. I leveraged relationships to carry on with the project.
Despite the hurdles, I completed the film. This experience taught me the importance of resilience, adaptability, and the power of community support. It reinforced my belief that with determination and creativity, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
NFT art represents an exciting evolution in the art world, offering new opportunities for artists to monetize their work and for collectors to invest in digital assets.
However, it’s important to approach this space with caution, considering both the potential benefits and the challenges.
