We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lucky Steele a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lucky, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Retro Cowgirl started out in a small farm town called Brentwood in Northern California. I met Wicho, our guitarist, when he moved there from Nicaragua. He came to the U.S. to follow his dream of making music for a living. He and I started ramping things up during Covid but he then told me he wanted to move to Texas. I mourned the loss of the band for a while, but then he gave me the idea to move with him to keep the band together. I agreed, and we fought hard to find support in a brand new state. Starting over was extremely difficult, but we had each other to rely on and it made it easier that he had already taken that risk of moving countries for music. He helped me keep my head on straight through all the worries about this huge decision, and it was the best one I’ve ever made.

Lucky, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Retro Cowgirl is a Texas-based rock band that combines heavy guitar riffs, lively drums, and powerful female vocals to create a modern take on the sounds of 70’s and early 2000’s rock music. The band is composed of lyricist and lead vocalist Lucky Steele, lead guitarist Luis Fiallos, bassist Mikey Elizondo and drummer Jonluca Biagini.
The band started gaining traction in 2021 with the release of their song, “Stronger”.
They invested their own money into multiple music videos that gained the attention of the brand Topo Chico, who then sponsored the video for their song “Honey”.
The band’s live performances are what sets them apart from others with vivacious energy and interactive chants.
Their new song “We’ll be Alright” is coming out February 20th everywhere.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the deeper connections I can make with people from my music. When I have someone tell me that my lyrics helped them through a difficult time, or that they understand where I’m coming from, it makes my heart so happy.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
When I first started making music I wish I knew about how important it is to support other artists. They’re your community and your lifeline. They can help you when you don’t know how to market yourself, and they can also help you find more venues to perform at. You can benefit greatly from supporting the other artists around you. Also it’s just a nice thing to do.
