Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lucky Anderson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lucky, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I am so thankful for my parents and all they poured into me as a shy little girl!! My mother taught me how to bake when I was 6 and would take me to arts and crafts stores weekly until I was able to take myself. Being a natural artist herself, she always believed in me creatively expressing myself through different mediums. In high school she introduced me to a local cake supply store and I’ve been hooked to the cake world ever since ! My father helped me to refine my craft by encouraging me to never give up ! A lot of people don’t know it but I use to cry ALL THE TIME when my projects and cakes didn’t turn out the way I expected. In his cool and calm voice my father would say “It’s ok, just make another one and I’ll eat this one!” In retrospect he ate a lot of my baking. LOL But without him pushing me to correct my mishaps or my mother’s dedication to advance my creative skills, I wouldn’t be who I am today!

Lucky, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Yes, so I proud myself in being the best edible artist in Indianapolis! Named after my daughter, I created Zoë’s World of Cakes which is Indianapolis most versatile cake company specifically designed for those who desire “The Finer Cakes in Life”.
Zoë’s World specializes in freestyled tiered, 2D and 3D sculpted cakes. Focusing on providing clients with a unique creation, my cake designs are tailored to clients specifications resulting in custom edible art every time.
In 2021 my daughter and I made our TV debut on Food Network’s Road to Halloween Wars and I went on to compete on Halloween Wars Season 11. Thirsty for more competition I flew to Austin, Texas to compete in the That Takes The Cake competition and went home with a 3rd place medal. Although it wasn’t 1st place, I have since then been nationally recognized by top television/streaming platforms and will be competing in another cake show this 2024!

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
After Zoë was born I always had 2-3 jobs/hustles as a single mother. Once I realized I could make triple my bi-weekly paycheck in one weekend decorating cakes at home, I knew it was time to take my little cake hustle to the next level! I was fortunate enough to have friends who helped me get my LLC in 2017, purchase tools for my business and introduce me to a new clientele. Every year I made it a point to leverage my tax return and invest it back into my business. I can honestly say I never would’ve guessed that my love for cake making would turn into the successful business it is today!

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
Years ago back in 2008 when I lived in Louisville I use to make a specialty dessert cake for close friends and family that was a chocolate masterpiece! I’m talking rich chocolate cake, salted caramel, toffee pieces, chocolate ganache and whipped cream icing perfectly layered together. People in Louisville STILL ask me about it to this day! So when I learned an ex-friend of mine had planned on offering an inferior variation of said dessert it REALLY lit a fire inside of me. lol
That was the year I decided to launch a Mothers Day dessert cake sale that included that chocolate masterpiece. Not only did I have the highest sales in my cake making history EVER, but I did so during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I felt beyond accomplished and learned to have a better appreciation towards those who indirectly influenced by me.
