We recently connected with Lucki Malloy and have shared our conversation below.
Lucki , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
In 2013 I started my journey as a lifestyle photographer the day I was gifted a canon rebel camera for Christmas from my Dad. I was inspired to capture more of those every day moments of my daughters childhood. As time went on and I am talking years of learning the ins and out of my camera along with everything else that has to do with photography is when I had friends ask me to take pictures for them. I said no at first due to fear but finally in 2018 I decide to put myself out there and give it shoot. I quickly realized It wasn’t just about taking pictures but creating memories for others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi my name is Lucki! I am lifestyle photographer and family filmmaker. I was gifted a camera 9 years ago when my daughter was a baby and feel in love with freezing moments and capturing videos of our adventures! I have always been a creative and it wasn’t until 2018 when I took pictures for a friend’s engagement that I realized I could actually turn this into a business. I dove head in and put all of my free time learning the ins and outs. It wasn’t until 2021 I was able to quick my restaurant job and become full time which was such a huge accomplishment for my family and I. My goal with every session is for my clients to see the beauty in the in-between moments. Those moments you can’t force to happen, I make sure to set up a welcoming environment for my clients to feel at ease and be themselves. I often hear clients say that they want to wait till their kids get older, till they loose weight or whatever excuse they have and I do not recommend that! Embrace the chaos of your littles, the tantrums, tears, all of it – they’re only little once and this stage will soon be over and you’ll miss it one day. Maybe not any day soon but one day. When it comes to body image I can totally relate and I have missed out on being in photos because of it, but your kids don’t see that when they look at you – you’re their hero, they see so much beauty and they deserve to have pictures with you in them despite your insecurities.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist definitely has its ups and downs however the most rewarding aspect is being able to work when my kids are sleeping. I am stay at home/work from home mom and prior to staying home. I was working 40 hours in the evenings and weekends at a restaurant which resulted in me missing out on so many moments with my oldest daughter who is ten now. While I still do miss out on moments and not everything is rainbows and butterflies life is so much better.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
There are so many resources I wish I knew about earlier in my career, the main one that helped me grow the most is mentorships. I wish I invested money up front when starting out my business. I am very much a hands on learner and learning from others who have been in my shoes prior to me have taught me so much. YouTube is a great source as well but if you’re a hands on learner like me I highly recommend finding a in person mentor.
