Lucie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?
During my time at university and in law school, I intern at many different law firms. These positions helped me see the day to operations of not only different law firms, but different attorneys in various practice areas. There are many pros for interning, and depending on the type of firm where you complete your internship can teach you a lot about running a business, interpersonal relationships, and client management. Having the opportunity to work in a smaller office, you get a closer look at the inner workings of the business side of the law firm and are easily able to closely shadow attorneys. I always had the best experience in smaller environments with being able to be hands on with projects, or shadowing attorneys at hearings as a young, student and aspiring attorney. While interning in larger offices, I think it is helpful to observe how larger business structures are run, and the interpersonal relations. With larger firms you not only get to shadow experienced attorneys, but you get to observe personnel structures to better understand business structure which can be helpful if you want to start your own business one day.
Prior to interning, I was not completely sure which area of law I wanted to focus on early in my career. Through various internships, I was able to determine litigation, specifically criminal law was of the greatest interest to me. I think that the internship experience is invaluable because reading about an area of law and watching how things play out in day-to-day practice are not always the same. Client and case management, time management and navigating opposing counsel are not skills that can be taught in the classroom and real-life experience is invaluable through a quality internship.
Lucie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I always wanted to help people. When I was young thinking about the career I wanted when I grew up I knew I wanted to do something where i could effectuate change and help the community. Becoming an attorney meant more to me than just arguing in court, it is because I am the voice for my clients. Having an attorney that genuinely cares about the outcome makes a huge difference in the quality of representation that you get as a client.
Being a first generation American, I understand how difficult it can be for people to not only transition to a new country, but also to obtain citizenship. This is a process that involves the legal system as well. Every person’s journey can be different, and some are simpler than others. Having an attorney who understands how to navigate the legal systems, knowing what to do and what to say at the appropriate times can make a huge difference in the length of time in the legal system.
Knowing that I wanted to help people fueled my passion for criminal law specifically. This area of law deals directly with the liberty of people and has a great impact not only the individual but also their loved ones. Criminal defense attorneys are valuable because this can be a very emotional process for someone and representing yourself without having a strong grasp of the law can lead to serious consequences including prison time. There are many aspects of litigation, rules of evidence and nuances in the law that a normal citizen may not understand which is why hiring a competent criminal defense attorney is crucial to success in your case, especially during trial. Being able to assess the merits of the case early on, evaluate potential weaknesses and defenses, and participate in motion practice and trial are all necessary for practice as a criminal defense attorney.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Personal referrals. When you do a great job for someone, they will spread the word to everyone they meet that you can be of assistance to. I find that former clients, and even other attorneys are happy to share or refer case to my office because of my reputation and the work that I may have done in their case.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Treat people well and treat people with respect. Make sure that you are honest and straightforward with your staff and set expectations that are reasonable. Communication is key. Communicating in a respectful manner, and also communicating so that others understand where you are coming from and what you are saying. Providing a work life balance for people. This is a job, and a career, but people still have families and their own lives which are very important as well.
