We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lucia Rinaldi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lucia below.
Lucia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
I don’t think there is a specific formula to be successful of course. I think that in order to be great at something it’s very important to have someone to guide you. Mentors are very important, whatever job or career path one may have. In Italy, mentoring is not really common, so when I moved to London first and then Los Angeles I slowly understood the importance of mentoring and how vital sometime this practice is. Since living in the US I’ve been seeking for mentors that not only could teach and improve my work skills and ethic but also someone who strongly believes in you and try to advance you in your career. In 2021 I was lucky enough to be selected for the ASC vision mentorship program and was paired with Patti Lee ASC. Patti and I had chance to meet in person multiple times, she has taught me so much in lighting, visualization and professional ethics. Patti was generous to offer all her knowledge and insight. She was genuinely the best mentor I could ever ask for.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I work as Director of Photography both in the US and EU. The director of photography is the person that curates the visual aspect of films, tv series etc. During the pre-production phase we usually help the director pre visualize the story depending on story, mood, genre and possible informations given by the director. After pre-view we have to slowly bring the vision to life by understanding what lighting, camera equipment will be needed of set. We then collaborate with hundreds of people and crafts on set to bring the movie to life the way was thought and intended. Finally, during the post-production phase we take care of the color grading and work with a colorist that will help us tweak or improve the images captured on set. I got into films when I was very little, I was going through long time of convalescence and at the hospital I was allowed to watch one movie a day, only right after lunch. Since then I’ve been nurturing my love for visual storytelling, first as a photographer and then as cinematographer, my goal has been to help tell stories about defining moments of someone’s life regardless of genre of style.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I have many goals driving my creative journey at the moment. I want to work and create stories that can give a different perspective of life and culture to as many people as I possibly can. I want to create scholarships for Italians that want to pursue their studies and careers in the art field and I want to make filmmaking more accessible to younger generation too. All these are opportunities that I never had or dreamed of that I think can offer more opportunities to young artists in countries where there are very few funds dedicated to it.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Working in a creative field such as filmmaking is never truly easy. I think the reason why so many people still decide to pursue a career like this is because of the incredibly rewarding aspects of it. The feeling of being able to spark feeling, emotions and thoughts in someone’s life I think is what feel most rewarding to me. To be able to “speak” with people through art is what I think makes all the ups and downs of such career worth it.
