Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Luci Fry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Luci thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
I hear many people talk about their ‘love language’ or how they show their love and affection for others. For me, that’s easy to determine – it’s food! I have always enjoyed food and not just eating it but everything about it. I love talking about what I’m going to make for dinner, looking at cookbooks or following food blogs for inspiration and of course, I enjoy cooking and baking.
As I thought about the direction of my career path and how to incorporate my passion for food into it, I came across a training program to become a nutrition coach. This sounded perfect for me. I could help people feel better by eating well. And now came the hard part, setting up my own business to do this.
I didn’t struggle with setting up my LLC or with creating a website. The challenge for me was determining what services I wanted to offer and how I wanted to deliver these services. I spent many hours creating a process that made sense and that I thought people would value. I went through many iterations of intake forms, assessment forms, email templates, etc. Looking back, I know that I spent too much time doing this and second guessing my decisions. An important lesson I learned through this process is that sometimes you have to start with what you have and make it better as you go instead of waiting until you have a perfect service offering. Ultimately, I’m happy with what I came up with and how it has evolved. Even now, I continue to make changes to my process and nutrition coaching programs in an attempt to make them even better.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Over the last few years I’ve seen how food plays a significant role in how one feels throughout the day and especially how food affects how one feels during exercise. I’ve experienced is first hand, I’ve seen it in the way my children perform during their sporting events and I’ve seen how food impacts clients’ performance during a training session. I started Simple Good Food, LLC so that I can help people eat well, feel better and achieve their goals.
The most rewarding thing about what I do is seeing clients achieve their goals. There’s nothing better than having a client send me a picture of themselves in a dress they fit into for the first time in years or at the end of a race they just set a personal record in. I keep clients accountable and provide them with the support they need to meet their goals.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes! I love working in the health and wellness industry. It’s an industry that keeps growing and changing. There is always something new that I can be learning to make myself more knowledgable and better able to help my clients.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
There is nothing like hands on experience. You can read all the books you can and take all the training course you can sign up for, but nothing prepares you better than working hands on with clients. Most books and training courses teach you how to work with the average client. I have learned that there is no average client. Everyone is different and has their specific needs. You quickly have to adjust your process or products to suit the individual’s needs in order to be successful.
