We were lucky to catch up with Lucas Tabaka recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lucas, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
I launched my photography business during high school, earlier than I had anticipated. Capturing portraits brought me immense joy, prompting me to turn my passion into a business endeavor. Reflecting on this decision, I realize that starting a couple of years later might have been more advantageous. With additional time, I could have built up more resources, established connections, and gained stability, setting the stage for a more prosperous business venture.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey into photography began in a publications class where I honed my skills behind the lens. This passion extended beyond the classroom as I started capturing portraits, with my cousin being my primary model. Working with someone close to me allowed me to develop confidence in directing and posing subjects during photoshoots. This experience paved the way for me to expand into senior portraits, family sessions, and couple photos. Eventually, I ventured into shooting weddings and events, broadening my portfolio and expertise in the field.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Utilizing social media as a tool to reach a wide clientele is undeniably effective. However, as I am already fully occupied as a social media manager professionally, I often find myself reluctant to promote my photography services on my personal social accounts. Instead, I have found success in expanding my client base through in-person networking. With a large extended family, I have been able to leverage these connections to establish valuable relationships and secure new clients.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I recall a memorable photo shoot I had scheduled on an exceptionally cold day, with temperatures hovering around 18 degrees. Despite the harsh conditions, the client was enthusiastic about proceeding with the shoot. I layered up to combat the cold and forged ahead with capturing the photos. Despite my hands nearly freezing, my determination to deliver exceptional images kept me going. In the end, my perseverance paid off, and I was able to capture some truly remarkable photos.
