We were lucky to catch up with LuAnna Gerdemann recently and have shared our conversation below.
LuAnna, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
About a year ago, one of my friends, Carla, ran for a seat on our local City Council. Ever since I had met Carla, she has been extremely community focused and has had a good pulse on what our community needs in local government. I had the opportunity to help her with her campaign through my design and photography services. I worked with her on designing her yard signs and door hangers and took photos of her for her campaign. This project was really meaningful to me because it gave me an opportunity to support my friend and her efforts to create positive change in our local community.
LuAnna, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, I’m Lu. I have always found myself creating throughout my life, whether it was drawing as a child, playing musical instruments in school, or taking photographs in my free time. I went to school for graphic design and was a photojournalist for my school’s newspaper. After college, I found it difficult to break into the creative industry without much experience under my belt, and took on a sales position at a local newspaper. As you can probably gather, selling newspaper ads in the 21st century was quite the challenge, but, it gave me another perspective on design through helping my clients build out their ads. This job didn’t last long, and I found myself wanting to design the ads more than sell them. After I left this job, I started my creative company, Lu Supply Co, providing creative services like graphic design, photography and videography. I primarily would design, photograph and produce videos for commercial clients, so there has always been a marketing angle to the majority of the work I create. I think this is what sets me apart from other creatives, having my sales background and creating with a marketing perspective. I am most proud of starting this business, as it was a huge risk and leap of faith in myself to put myself out there and take on the role of being a business owner. While I do create commercially, I never want to lose my drive to create for creation’s sake; to produce passion projects and grow my own creative style. I am so grateful for my clients and supporters who have encouraged me to keep pursuing this dream, and I am excited to take this entrepreneurial journey of mine and share it with the world.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Creating something from nothing.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think sometimes creativity is simplified and made out to be easier than it actually is. Creativity is a lot of problem solving, process building and has the same building blocks of skillsets required as non-creative fields of work. Creativity is witnessed on a daily basis in anyone’s walking life and is a beautiful part of the human experience.
