We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luann Hull a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luann , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I was born in the 50’s just after World War II, when women, returned to hearth and home after having gone into the work place to occupy positions vacated by men who’d gone off to battle. In those temporary rolls, women proved themselves to be quite worthy of taking on jobs, which had primarily been assigned to men. Nonetheless, when the men came home, most women resumed their support roles, which was the case in my household. And even though my parent’s marriage was far less than ideal, I still held onto the fantasy that there would be a Prince Charming in my future who’d be my ticket to happiness and well-being. All I had to do was to find and marry him and everything would be okay. It wasn’t until my marriage failed and I found myself alone with two young boys to rear on my own, that I finally came to this realization: There would be no one to save me but myself. Since then, I have spent the rest of my adult life (which is not a short period of time) attempting to help others recognize that the true ticket to happiness and well-being is uncovering your strengths and gifts and how you can use those in service to the world. it is my passion to support others in coming to a similar understanding. The details of my personal journey can be found in two educational memoirs: Happily Ever After…Right Now, and Self Belonging. A handbook to accompany both will be out late Spring, 2023.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
After my divorce, when I found myself responsible for rearing two young boys, I put myself through graduate school and earned a Masters in Clinical Social Work. My first job was in a psychiatric hospital in the early 90’s, in which the then new “wonder” drugs, Prozac and Zoloft, were being frequently administered. When I found myself on one of those drugs, suffering near intolerable side effects, I decided to research alternative methods to psychotropic medication for mental health issues, and have been pursuing those ever since. Fortunately, over the course of the last 30 years, there are many findings to support how meditation and mental focus can help to alter brain chemistry–that by simply using your breath, you can increase a neuron in the brain (Economo neuron) which can help to mitigate stress and anxiety. I am very grateful for my journey and all of the ways that I have learned how maintaining an above neutral attitude, no matter what curve balls you are thrown, is the only decent way to live. As I say in one of my books:”Victims are volunteers.” Don’t project. Just take responsibility for your own life and move on down the road if you don’t like what someone else is doing in your orbit. Many of my findings can be found in both of my books, Happily Ever After…Right Now, and Self Belonging, as well as a handbook to accompany both, due out this Spring.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
After working in a psychiatric hospital, I was approached by a local psychologist who solicited me to go into practice with her. I naively accepted the position, trusting her word that there would be plenty of referrals as well as a guaranteed split of whatever income I brought in, which was heavily weighted in my favor. When arguing there was no reason to sign an agreement, she said with a straight face, “What’s not to trust about me?” i learned very quickly, the answer. One month after I took the position without signing a contract, she changed the terms of our financial agreement. and I learned very quickly that the referrals were mighty sparse. While I was furious, I had no one to blame but myself for not doing more research into her practice as well as her character. Since I had burned my bridge at the psychiatric hospital, I had to consider what options I had left. I could either stay in this faltering practice, or maybe it was time for me to follow my true calling, which was to pursue my passion for more study and research into alternative methods for health and healing. In choosing the latter, I had no idea how I was going to survive financially. That was twenty-three years ago, and by the grace of God and the generosity of many who have helped me along the way, I have been supported in my pursuit of this path of study and knowledge.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
By some stroke of remarkable luck, I had enough capital to launch my business and so I invested in myself–even when others were skeptical. I have never regretted that decision. If that isn’t an option, there are many ways to obtain business loans these days–even pay pal has a plan to assist. If there is a will, there is a way. No one on this earth has the exact blueprint of strengths and gifts as you, and if you don’t share what you have, the world will be missing something!
