We recently connected with Luana Sandoval and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Luana, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning the craft of singing, songwriting, and dancing is a journey that evolves through dedication, passion, and diverse experiences. My journey began at the age of five when I delved into classical ballet, immersing myself in performances like Giselle and other theater productions. For seven years, ballet was my foundation until I transitioned into modern dance, captivating audiences across Germany and eventually throughout Europe and New York with belly dancing.
While already established in the dance world, I turned my attention to singing. Starting with opera under the guidance of Opera singer Vera Ilieva from Bulgaria in 2011, I quickly progressed, earning acceptance to study opera singing at the Saarland University of Music in Germany under Professor Yaron Windmuller. This classical training not only honed my vocal abilities but also instilled a deep understanding of musicality and performance.
However, it was through this classical training that I discovered my true passion in songwriting. Studying under Judy Stakee, I learned to craft songs that resonated with my vision and emotions, bridging the gap between inspiration and creation. Understanding the fundamentals of music production further empowered me to bring my compositions to life, collaborating with esteemed producers like Mark Roos, KingCharlie Prince, Pat Lassiter, and Collin Stanley.
Each producer brought a unique flair to my music, tailored to the specific vibe and genre I envisioned. From Nashville-inspired tunes to 80s-themed anthems, their expertise helped shape my sound into a versatile tapestry of melodies. This diversity reflects not only my musical influences but also the culmination of my journey through various disciplines.
The foundation laid by my classical training in ballet, opera, and musical instruments like violin and piano proved invaluable. It provided me with a deep understanding of musical theory, allowing me to seamlessly transition between genres and experiment with different styles. Moreover, the ability to read music and improvise added layers of complexity to my compositions, enhancing their depth and richness.
In essence, learning the craft of singing, songwriting, and dancing is an ongoing process fueled by passion, dedication, and a thirst for knowledge. It’s about embracing diverse experiences, honing one’s skills, and continually pushing the boundaries of creativity. Through dedication and perseverance, I have found my voice and forged a path uniquely my own in the world of music and dance.

Luana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My journey into the entertainment industry is a vibrant tapestry of inspiration, creativity, and dedication. From my early exposure to classical ballet and opera shows with my parents, to the electrifying influence of Madonna on my artistic aspirations, each step has woven its unique thread into the fabric of my artistic identity.
My decision to pursue dance and vocal lessons, fueled by the passion ignited by Madonna’s performances, exemplifies my unwavering commitment to my craft. It’s evident that Madonna’s dedication to her artistry, coupled with the collaboration of her former percussionist Miroca Paris and personal trainer Marlyn Ortiz, has profoundly shaped my perspective on what it means to excel in the industry.
My bold audition for American Idol Season 19, where I fearlessly showcased my unique fusion of pop opera and belly dance with the song Frozen by Madonna, reflects my refusal to compromise my artistic integrity for commercial appeal. Despite the judges’ feedback,I remained steadfast in my authenticity, staying true to the essence of opera and my individual expression.
The creation of my TV show, “Songs of My Life,” and the subsequent founding of my record label, Devana Records LLC, highlight my entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to celebrating the journeys of fellow musicians. Through interviews and collaborations, I’ve forged connections within the industry while staying rooted in my artistic vision.
My eclectic musical influences, ranging from Madonna and Cyndi Lauper to Dolly Parton and Bulgarian folk music, underscore the rich tapestry of sounds and styles that inform my unique genre. As I embark on the production of my first music video for “In Time,” drawing inspiration from the vibrant energy of the 80s and iconic hits, my passion for storytelling through music shines brightly.
In every endeavor, from dance to music production, I embody the essence of creativity, resilience, and authenticity. My journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression and the unwavering belief in staying true to oneself amidst the ever-evolving landscape of the entertainment industry.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In November 2020, amidst auditions for American Idol, I embarked on a parallel journey of resilience and self-discovery. Relocating to Nashville due to pandemic closures, I embraced a new beginning. Despite setbacks, including an emotionally tumultuous experience with a narcissistic co-writer, I refused to succumb to despair.
My time in Nashville became a testament to perseverance. Amidst forging connections with fellow musicians and immersing myself in the vibrant music scene, I confronted personal demons. Through introspection and creative expression, I found solace in songwriting, channeling pain into cathartic melodies.
Despite the trauma inflicted by the narcissistic abuse, I refused to be silenced. Embracing my identity as a gay individual, I penned pride anthems, reclaiming power through vulnerability. My journey of healing involved confronting childhood trauma, seeking therapy, and finding solidarity in shared experiences.
Recording sessions in Nashville served as a symbolic closure, a testament to my resilience in the face of adversity. Confronting my abuser, I reclaimed agency, reaffirming my worth and refusing to be defined by past scars. My journey serves as a beacon of hope for those silenced by toxic relationships, reminding them of their inherent strength and resilience.
Through adversity, I emerged stronger, my voice echoing a message of empowerment and defiance against oppression. My journey is a testament to the transformative power of resilience and self-belief, inspiring others to break free from the shackles of abuse and reclaim their narratives.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is fueled by a profound goal: to be a voice of hope for those who have been silenced by adversity. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences and the world around me, I am driven by a mission to drive my creative pursuits towards healing, empowerment, and advocacy.
From a young age, dance has been my passion and refuge, serving as a form of expression amidst life’s challenges. Now, I aspire to transform my dance play “Life of a Dancer” into a powerful narrative through a short film. Influenced by the vibrancy of New York City, I have meticulously crafted eight original pieces, each set against iconic backdrops like Times Square, capturing the essence of the city’s spirit.
Central to my vision is assembling a talented cast of dancers who can embody the energy and emotion of each scene, alongside a skilled videographer to bring my vision to life. While financial constraints pose a challenge, I am committed to compensating my team fairly, recognizing their invaluable contributions to the project.
Beyond dance, my creative endeavors extend to songwriting, a cathartic outlet through which I have navigated the complexities of healing from bullying and emotional abuse. My recent experience with a narcissistic collaborator has further fueled my determination to share my journey from brokenness to resilience.
I envision a feature film that delves into the transformative power of songwriting, shedding light on the often-overlooked issue of emotional abuse. Through storytelling, I aim to raise awareness and offer solace to those who have endured similar trauma, advocating for healing and empowerment.
My message is one of resilience and hope, transcending personal pain to inspire others to reclaim their narratives and stand tall in the face of adversity. As I embark on the scriptwriting process, I am driven by a steadfast commitment to bringing this project to fruition, seeking funding to amplify its impact and reach a wider audience.
In sharing my story, I hope to spark conversations, challenge societal norms, and ultimately foster a culture of empathy and understanding. Through art, I strive to empower individuals to find their voices, confront their demons, and embrace the journey towards healing and self-discovery.
