We were lucky to catch up with Luana Heidemann recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Luana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How’s you first get into your field – what was your first job in this field?
The reason I became a Health and Wellness Coach is because I believe lifestyle is medicine. I worked in Healthcare for 13 years and saw how easy it is to prescribe medication for conditions that can be avoided, or improved, with your lifestyle.
Not that I believe that there is no place for that but, if we are able to reduce how much medication we are on or discontinue it all together then why not?
I was able to see first hand how making small lifestyle changes can make huge impacts in our lives.
Not only were clients healthier but they were happier and able to do things that they thought would be impossible. I wanted to be a part of that. I wanted to help people reach their wellness potential. I had a superior who championed me to pursue health and wellness coaching. She felt it would be a good fit for me. We discussed the educational requirements and created a path that allowed me to both work and study.
It is my pride and joy to see clients lives change. Wellness is accessible to everyone and I love helping people get there.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been happily married for 21 years and currently live in South Florida. I was born and raised in Chicago and don’t miss the winter.
After getting married I moved to Sheboygan, Wisconsin and worked in Internal Medicine for 8 years. After moving back to Chicagoland I started to work for a company that focused on prevention and lifestyle change and it changed my life. This motivated me to change paths and become a Health Coach.
As a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, I am your partner in our wellness journey, your cheerleader! You have everything within you to make transformational changes, all you need is to discover your blocks, barriers and implement what works for you. This enables you to make sustainable and long lasting changes.
I can support you with sleep, nutrition, stress management/anxiety, reducing toxic load, exercise and more. I offer 1:1 Health Coaching as well as Group Coaching.
What sets me apart is that my clients learn how to listen to their bodies by using applied kinesiology. Our bodies know what is good for us or not. If we learn how to communicate with our bodies we will be able to make the best choices that are unique to us.
I also encourage the use of grounding, also known as earthing, to help bring down our bodies stress levels and get out of fight or flight.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that all health issues should be addressed with medications. I learned how important our lifestyle is to either develop health conditions or avoid it. Family history of a chronic disease is not necessarily something we need to develop. I have heard so many times how someone’s physician is prescribing medication because someone is “predisposed” to a health concern instead of addressing lifestyle. Our family history is like a light switch that we can turn on and off with our lifestyle. If we can avoid taking a medication or take less of it why not try?
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
I would absolutely choose this profession again. Seeing how the world has changed after the pandemic, people need to learn how to take care of their health more than ever. Nutrition, physical activity, stress management, sleep and other aspects of our lifestyle can help determine our outcome to disease. I want to help as many people as possible to reach their wellness potential so that they don’t need to be so afraid to get sick because their bodies are stronger.
