We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lu Wang a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lu, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
When I pass away, I hope what I leave behind is the freedom of thought and the influence to become free individuals. I must say that engaging with art has, in a certain sense, helped me become a freer person. Unconstrained by rules, I can create the works I love at will. I would say that I view and feel the world through an artistic lens. This world appears free, but in reality, it is full of hidden rules. I believe that after I am gone, people will say that my life was not lived in vain because I lived it as I wished. I hope people will remember me for the magical feeling they experienced after interacting with me. This feeling transcends the mundane and embodies a lifestyle of carefree wandering.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into dance began at a young age when I discovered a passion for movement and expression through music. Growing up in Beijing, China, I was admitted to a professional dance school in middle school, where I continued my studies. Later, I moved to the United States to complete my undergraduate and graduate degrees in dance, and now I am embarking on my dance career as an independent dancer and choreographer.
As an multi-disciplinary artist, I often collaborate with various artists such as composers, photographers, and designers to create diverse works of art. My aim is to explore and try new things, pushing boundaries and breaking rules both in life and in my artistic creations. I see the world through the lens of art and prefer to immerse myself in my own creative world, continuously producing new works. As a professional dancer, I provide a wide range of creative works, including live performances, choreography for events, workshops, and dance classes. My goal is to inspire and uplift through movement, offering audiences a transformative experience that speaks to the emotions and stories we all share. I also work with clients to create custom choreographies for special occasions, ensuring their visions come to life in a unique and memorable way.
What sets me apart is my dedication to authenticity and connection. I bring a genuine emotional depth to my performances and teaching, fostering a sense of community and shared experience. My approach integrates elements of storytelling, musicality, and technical precision to create impactful and meaningful dance works. I am not a follower of rules but a breaker of rules, striving to evoke deep emotional responses in my audience. One of my proudest achievements is my trust and confidence in myself, allowing me to live as my authentic self and maintain a deep sensitivity to the world around me. This self-assurance enables me to create and present artistic works that invite the audience to enter the world I’ve created, engaging in thought and reflection rather than focusing on me as an individual.
To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that my work is rooted in passion and a deep love for the art of dance. I am committed to exploring new creative horizons while staying true to the essence of what makes dance so powerful. Whether you are looking for an inspiring performance, engaging dance education, or bespoke choreography, I am here to bring your vision to life with dedication and artistry.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most valuable aspect of being an artist is provoking thought in the viewers through my work. I believe that as the world grows and technology advances, more and more people are gradually losing the ability to think critically. In the past, accessing information was difficult and required thought, but now information is easily obtainable without much effort. Art has the power to inspire thought because when people see an artwork, they experience a feeling, and it is through this feeling that they begin to think.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
I don’t think non-creative individuals will find it difficult to understand my journey as a creative person. More importantly, I don’t care whether I am understood or not. Everyone has different perspectives on life, the world, and values. Each person views and judges the world from their own standpoint. I believe that when people see my experiences as an artist, they will derive different feelings and conclusions. I don’t expect people to understand my journey; instead, I hope that seeing my journey will inspire their own reflections. It’s like comparing myself to an art piece—I enjoy seeing the brainstorming and diverse interpretations and ideas that arise when people view an artwork. The diversity of thought is extremely important.
