We caught up with the brilliant and insightful L$P a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi L$P, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
One of the first songs I ever wrote was about suicide. The first time that I performed it, I witnessed how music can touch the souls of others. There were crowds of people crying from the joy of having someone see them and know what it’s like to be in that situation. I could tell that music could change lives and from there I began seriously working to perfect my craft and do this full time.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a black, queer, masculine presenting woman, I have fought to make my presence in this world known. It’s difficult for women of color to feel seen, heard, and acknowledged. I began making music as an escape from the everyday societal pressure and finally have a voice. Music was my therapy and I used it as a journal of my life, my feelings, and my thoughts that often went unheard. As I started my spiritual journey to find a deeper meaning of self, I found my inner beast who I lovingly call W$LF. From there, I coined my brand and my tribe as the W$LFPACK and the rest was really all due to divine timing. I knew I desired to make a difference in a way that hasn’t been done before. I took that passion and dedication to acknowledge the overlooked, the underdogs, and the ones who needed someone to be that voice for them. what sets me apart is AUTHENCITY and LOVE. I operate with both in my everyday life and it’s what makes my music raw and heartfelt. I show up for my community and I will always make it my mission to never forget who I am and where I started.
I am most proud of my first tour that i curated all on my own and was funded purely by the love and support of my community. I traveled to Portland and Austin (during South by Southwest) and introduced people to my vision and my brand. Every city welcomed me with open hearts and showed so much love. The experience is one I will never forget and it’s by far one of my greatest accomplishments.
I want my fans to know that I am human just like them. There are times when things get challenging and you’re sitting in a hoodie listening to the Seattle Rain wondering what’s the purpose of life. On those days is when being a W$LF is most important. Be courageous. Be bold. Be wild and most of all …BE YOU!
Have you ever had to pivot?
In the fall of 2021, I was working with a local producer and all my masters to my songs were stolen by said producer. As a result, I missed numerous opportunities, including interviews, performances, etc. It began to negatively affect my brand and my reputation. I reached out to my community and was very vulnerable and transparent about what transpired. Two weeks later, someone dropped an entire recording studio at my doorstep!!! It was then I knew that this was my mission and my purpose and my ancestors 100% had my back. I took those experiences and turned them into music instead!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
honestly, it’s the interaction with the fans. To know that you are reaching someone is important. We assume grace is abundant and it’s not. Sometimes people just need to be reminded to stay encouraged. I love that as an artist, I can be that for someone.
