We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lovern Gordon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lovern, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
As a two-time sur-THRIVER of domestic violence (a child witness until she was 15 years old in Trinidad, as well as a 2-year, young adult relationship in the United States), this issue has been a part of my story. Ten years after escaping the adult relationship, I participated in and won two back-to-back pageants and used the platform to increase awareness around the issue in 2010. The following year, I launched the DV awareness organization, Love Life Now Foundation (LLN).
Today, I continue to head LLN, a global awareness, education organization that supports survivors of abuse through our year-round initiatives, as well as direct, financial assistance to DV Agencies. In 2021, I became a DV awareness book author of the international memoir called, The Legacy He Left Me, which is currently on a nationwide book and speaking tour. As a sought-after speaker, I conduct DV awareness workshops worldwide, in-person and virtually for corporations, state agencies, conferences, high schools, colleges and community groups.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We provide year-round:
-domestic violence (DV) awareness education via DV Workshops to schools, colleges, corporations
-host quarterly awareness event initiatives
-resources to DV survivors and some financial assistance to DV agencies.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
As a non-profit organization, we remain mission driven and focused and rely on our Board Members to help us stay that way, so we seek out Board Members who, for the most part, have been affected by the issue we are addressing everyday. That is half the battle since it creates a team that is fired up about the passion work!
Outside of our annual Board Retreat, where everyone can physically see and interact with each other, I meet with each Board Member at least three times a month in one-on-one meetings, so we can check in about said passion work, how they are doing and tackle any issues they might facing. Outside of one-on-ones around work, I have been intentional about wanting to see each of them outside of that, at least one time out of the year via a coffee date or lunch to break up the life of zooming.
I have seen that all of the above has resulted in continued high morale for our team.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
This year, I have been working with an Executive Coach… someone who is neutral that I lean on to help me with certain issues I may be dealing with as a leader, a listening ear overall about what’s taking place day-to-day and give tailored feedback, and helps me set goals.
She has definitely impacted my management and entrepreneurial thinking.
