Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lourdes Leiner. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lourdes, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I have moments in my creative career where my work often repelled members of the community. It created tension in my personal life. I soon learned the exact piece that repelled one attracted another with the same force. I soon channeled this into my creative practice and used this exact method to grow my career as an author. I have been able to be supported by a wide array of people with similar insights and interests in the world. It has helped me to connect with my community at a much deeper level.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started by writing poetry while surviving an emergency surgery, and then I soon started selling copies of my work. I grew and grew to where I am today. I am proud of my ability to create and maintain these deep creative connections in the community. I am grateful to play a role in the vibrant arts community in Tucson, Arizona, in my own way.
I want you to know that if you have ever felt alone in life and lost, I have, too. My work makes space for conversations people often avoid. It speaks of harder experiences and folds in love and resilience. We speak of fear, love, and dreams all with the same intensity.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I am a self-published Mexican-American woman author. Meaning I had to create the works from start to finish each time with no support. This vision is solely created by my hand, meaning you get a deeper connection to poetry without all the redline editing. I can keep in the gritty, vibrant, and real details. I can keep control over my work and use my passion to get the best possible work to you.
I started with poetry, and now, after four years, I have finished my first Science Fiction Novel.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Freedom, to create and to speak and express. I value this deeply. There were times I had felt trapped by my own life. My work has often helped me and others free ourselves of faulty thought patterns. It allows you to discover your voice again, stand up for yourself, and explore your mind without judgment.
