We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Louise Sturcken a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Louise, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My Roomate and I in NYC would edit our closets in our off time in our tiny Lower East Side apartment on Clinton Street. The bathtub was in the kitchen. It was very tiny. A literal tenement apt 5th floor walk up. Fun Fact: I thought our upstairs neighbor was dropping bowling balls on the floor turns out it was Emily Adams Bode a fellow southerner who was carrying her fabric rolls up 6 flights of stairs. Grit.
We both worked in fashion Christine worked in magazines and I worked at various retail start ups. We had a deep obsession with vintage but also didn’t want to look “Dusty”. Closet edits and honesty were key to keeping our lives manageable as everything in NYC needs to be a split second decision and space was an issue.
I’ve always loved building outfits even as a little girl I would do runway shows of my fits for my family. After 17 years of life in NYC I decided to return to my roots in Charleston, SC. I’m trying to recall my first client in NYC. Perhaps it was my friend Ruba Katrib, then her friend Rachel Rose. I had sort of forgotten about how much I enjoyed it until I returned to SC to manage Minnow, then Rag & Bone, and it was then I realized how much I loved giving people peace of mind and helping them purchase and make decisions. My first client in Charleston was my friend during Covid and then when I relocated in 2022 one client told another and another and I was fully booked 5 days a week. email me to book your closet consultation today [email protected]

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I help clients to edit their closets. We go through each piece like taking an actual inventory of the closet. People will often complain that they don’t have anything to wear when infact they have plenty and are likely missing one key item. A coat, a nice shoe, a t-shirt. Often After we have purged things to sell clients say they feel much lighter and that it was a life changing experience for them.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Staying authentic and telling the truth.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
