We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Louis Spagnuolo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Louis, thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
At my last job, I learned the importance of staying true to myself. It was easy to get caught up in comparing, competing, and trying to follow what others were doing, especially in an industry where success can look so different for everyone. But I realized that the best thing I can do for my career and my clients is to stay true to who I am. Even when it wasn’t easy, I always stood my ground on what aligned with my values and my work. That experience really reinforced that authenticity always lasts longer than imitation.

Louis, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a professional hair stylist and colorist based on Long Island, specializing in lived-in color, blondes, and bridal styling. I’ve loved the beauty industry for as long as I can remember. It really started when I was younger, watching my older sister get ready to go out. I’d help with her hair, run around grabbing makeup for her, and just be in awe of the transformation. That’s when I fell in love with the process of creating beauty and confidence through something as personal as hair.
What sets me apart is my attention to detail and how much I care about the overall experience. I want every person who sits in my chair to feel understood, comfortable, and confident when they leave. I also love to collaborate whether it’s with my sister, who’s now my bridal partner, or on creative and editorial projects like Harper’s Bazaar or New York Fashion Week. I always try to bring a mix of professionalism and artistry to everything I do.
I’m most proud of the reputation I’ve built for myself. My goal has always been to help people express themselves in a way that feels effortless, elevated, and true to who they are.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Right now, the most rewarding part of my career has been opening my own studio in Farmingdale, New York, with my partner @katiefro. She is someone I’ve had the privilege of working alongside for over six years at this point. It’s been such a full-circle moment for both of us. Having our own space has allowed both of us to connect with our clients on a deeper level and also meet so many new faces along the way.
At this point in my career, my clients genuinely feel like my friends. Every appointment is more than just a service. We catch up, laugh, and create moments together. It’s such a special thing to build those relationships and share so many milestones with them. That sense of connection is honestly what keeps me inspired every day.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
In the beginning, I really built my audience by putting myself out there anywhere I could. I was posting in every local Facebook group near where I worked, offering special promotions, and sometimes even doing work for free just to get my name out there. I never stopped posting, sharing my work, or showing up for myself.
I worked a lot of late nights and after hours.. and honestly, sometimes I still do. But I’ve always loved staying busy and being creative, so none of it ever felt like a chore. Over time, that consistency and love for what I do naturally built a community of clients who connected with my work.
