We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Louie Mack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Louie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Yes, I think in my music and my personal life I have been misunderstood and mischaracterized plenty of times. One of the most memorable times I felt misunderstood was a high school party my friends threw. When I arrived all of my friends were already present and one of my friends was DJ’ing the party. He was excited to see me and always supported my music so he made sure to throw on one of my latest releases. I noticed everyone listening closely and nodding their head but there was no more dancing and fun taking place. Originally I was confused on why he chose to play a song that would change the entire vibe of the party but then I realized that I truly did not have any music that could have fit that scene much better. I was creating from the standpoint of someone who loves the craft, but not creating music as the person I am in everyday life; doing the things that I enjoy. Whoever heard my music for the first time that day likely had a certain perception of me and what my art was about but that was not the image I truly wished to portray; that was not even all of who I am as I was nowhere near as developed as an artist. I always reflect on that moment when my songs get played at events or in the club now because it taught me to make the music that I want to hear in all the spaces I show up, while sticking true to my art and my original sound.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Louie Mack. I am an artist and creative from Philly and I truly enjoy making the music that I make. I grew up in a house where different types of music was played and I have influences from all different genres because of it. The most important of those genres was always Hip-Hop. I began writing and rapping as a child. As I continued living I felt myself becoming more of a student to the game, from a creative side as well as a business perspective. In high school I made the commitment to myself that I would follow my passion and become a full-time artist. Through many trials and tribulations, I have developed a sound heavily influenced by my upbringings and especially my life as an adult. Using school as a tool to relocate and become more embedded into my craft, I gained a lot of insight and inspiration from people from all over the world. Spending a lot of time in Atlanta, I learned a lot about the industry and the many different creatives that do what we do at a very high level. I am a co-founder and executive of DoYouKnowMe, LLC. An entertainment entity committed to celebrating creatives in all fields and growing together. My goal is to continue to find inspiration and continue to release bigger and better music, as well as other things down the line!
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to speak for the voiceless and uplift those who need it most. Whether that comes from my thought provoking lyrics to bring attention to a cause or my songs that you hear at a high volume when in the club with your friends, my goal is to connect to as many people as I can while I’m here.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is figuring out how many people are actually watching and paying attention. Often times, when things don’t go exactly like we planned it, we think no one is listening or cares about the things we’re putting out to the public. Seeing people out and they tell you how much they love your work or what really made a difference in their life is life changing for me and definitely the most rewarding. One of the reasons I could never stop creating.
