We recently connected with Loud Forest and have shared our conversation below.
Loud Forest, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
As a band, we create music in a variety of different ways, hoping to connect with an audience. When something lands, its hard not to think that it was because of certain qualities in the sound and production. “Oh people like loud guitars in our songs” we may say to ourselves after a song gets added to a big playlist. But when we are writing and producing new music, we have to follow the path of the individual songs in front of us. We have to create an atmosphere that expands on the energy that already exists in the lyrics and melodies. This may lead us to unexpected places, to creative risks that we did not plan. We know that it’s a trap to try to create something we think people will like. Risk is an important part of discovery in our creative process. We just finished making a new album and it lead us into new territory. 80’s synth pop. For two people who came up on folk music and indie rock, this is definitely foreign for us. We had to craft songs with techniques and equipment that are not natural for us. But the end result is something exciting that we hope people will like as much as we do.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Bernard and Rachel Chadwick are the husband-and-wife duo LOUD FOREST that create pop/rock music.
Rachel and Bernard first met by pure chance in the jungles of Costa Rica when they were teenagers. Perhaps the most fateful cute-meet outside fiction, the duo had instant artistic chemistry exchanging covers playing guitar and singing. It was young, wild love, sun bleached and wind worn, not knowing where they were going, but somehow feeling like the beginning of something big.
The band started while Bernard was earning his MFA at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. It was a way for rock to fuse into art and art to fuse into rock. This fusion became the exact intention of their music going forward. The band’s incorporation of pop sensibilities, ethereal vocals, insightful lyrics and rock undertones give them a sound that is unique, fun and sure to keep you grooving.
The band is set to release its 5th studio album later this year.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Artists get to create whatever they want. This is exciting because the art can show us something that that we didn’t know about ourselves or the world around us. The art gives back, that’s the most rewarding part of being an artist.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Keep making music. That’s the goal and the mission. There are so many things to distract or discourage creativity. When you collaborate, you have to keep the relationship working in order to keep making music. There are a lot of beautiful things that must align in order to keep that creative mechanism functioning. Keep that healthy in order to keep making music, that’s the driving force.
