We recently connected with Lotte Hauss and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lotte thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Even as a child, I had a profound sense that I would ultimately become an artist. The world around me seemed filled with mystery and magic, and I had a strong desire to express these perceptions through artistic means. However, it was a particular experience when I was five years old that solidified my calling. My parents took me to an exhibition where I encountered a piece by the renowned Italian artist Piero Manzoni titled “Merda d’artista” (“Artist’s Shit”). At the exhibition, I stood in front of Manzoni’s work, which was an unconventional creation to say the least. It consisted of canned feces labeled as “Artist’s Shit.” Despite its controversial nature, I found myself captivated by the audacity and thought-provoking nature of the piece. In that moment, a realization dawned upon me – the only way to truly engage with the profound and meaningful aspects of life, and to navigate the seriousness it entails with playfulnes, was through the pursuit of art.
Seeing “Merda d’artista” made me acutely aware of the power that art holds to challenge conventional norms, provoke thought, and delve into deeper layers of human existence. It ignited a passion within me to create and communicate ideas through artistic expression. From that point forward, my path became clear, and I knew deep in my heart that I wanted to dedicate my life to becoming an artist.
It was through art that I discovered a unique avenue to make sense of the world, to explore its intricacies, and to find solace amidst the chaos. By embracing an artistic path, I realized that I could not only express myself authentically but also bring meaning and beauty to others’ lives.
Lotte, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an artist, lecturer, founder, and mother, deeply passionate about my craft. My journey into the world of art began during my studies of fine arts and subsequent master’s degree in painting in Hamburg and Dresden. These formative experiences allowed me to refine my artistic skills and develop a unique perspective on the creative process.
In my artistic practice, I consider art-making as a sacred ritual. I see myself as a medium through which ideas and inspirations flow. This belief is particularly evident in the performances I create with my art collective, Maison Douce. These performances serve as a means of exploration, delving into the depths of artistic expression.
My body of work encompasses a diverse range of artistic mediums and techniques. I am proficient in traditional old master painting techniques, which I employ to create multifaceted visually and emotionally evocative pieces. Additionally, I work with felted sculptures, utilizing materials such as wool, gold, bones, and oil paint.
In recent years, I have also embraced the fusion of artistic and technological realms, incorporating AI tools into my creative process. One notable project that exemplifies this integration is “Future Artifacts.” Through this project, I explore the concept of artifacts from a matriarchal future, using a combination of traditional craft techniques and AI-powered tools to manifest captivating and thought-provoking artworks.
One of the driving forces behind my artistic practice is the desire to provide a visual commentary on the current issues that society faces, while also grappling with timeless questions of humanity. My artworks serve as offerings, amplifying the sacred and inviting viewers to connect with the cosmic forces that transcend our everyday existence. I believe that art has the power to transport us beyond the personal and into the realm of eternity.
Drawing inspiration from ancient times when our ancestors painted captivating images on torch-lit cave walls, I see no distinction between performing art and magic. I view my artistic process as a means of bringing forth what is hidden, absent, or yet to come into existence. It is through this lens that I strive to create art that resonates with viewers on a profound level.
What I am most proud of is my ability to constantly push the boundaries of my artistic practice. I am eager to experiment with different mediums, techniques, and technologies, seeking innovative ways to express my vision. This commitment to exploration and growth allows me to continuously evolve as an artist and offer fresh perspectives to my audience.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that my work is an invitation to embark on a transformative journey. By engaging with my art, they have an opportunity to explore the intersections of the tangible and intangible, the temporal and eternal. I strive to create art that not only captivates visually but also sparks introspection and fosters a connection to something greater than ourselves.
In summary, my art is a blend of traditional craftsmanship, innovative techniques, and a deep reverence for the mystical aspects of existence. I am driven by a desire to make the invisible visible, and my works serve as portals to transcendence. I am excited to share my creative endeavors with the world and invite others to join me on this artistic exploration.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is driven by the mission to restore the magic and transformative power of contemporary art. I firmly believe that we are currently at a pivotal moment in history, where traditional beliefs and systems no longer suffice in providing adequate answers to the complex challenges we face. In this context, I see art as an essential catalyst for healing, fostering deep connections, and forging a vision for our collective future.
Art possesses a unique quality of oscillating between providing answers and posing thought-provoking questions. It has the capacity to transcend the boundaries of conventional thinking, allowing us to explore new perspectives and delve into the mysteries of existence. Through my work, I aim to reawaken the inherent magic that resides within art and reignite its potential to ignite transformative experiences.
I believe that art serves as a conduit for connecting people with the cosmic forces that surround us. It holds the power to evoke profound emotions, challenge preconceived notions, and inspire meaningful dialogue. By engaging with art, individuals can tap into a deeper understanding of themselves, their communities, and the world at large.
My goal is to create art that serves as a bridge between the tangible and intangible, the known and unknown. I strive to spark curiosity, ignite imaginations, and encourage viewers to question their own perceptions of reality. By doing so, I hope to contribute to a collective exploration of what our future should look like and, more importantly, how it should feel.
Ultimately, my mission is to help cultivate a society that embraces art as a vital source of inspiration, wisdom, and connection. I aspire to instill a renewed sense of wonder and enchantment in the world, reminding people of the transformative potential that lies within each artistic encounter. Through my art, I aim to create immersive and multi-sensory experiences that go beyond the mere visual realm. I employ a diverse range of artistic mediums and techniques to evoke emotional responses and provoke contemplation. Whether it’s through intricate paintings, textured sculptures, or interactive installations, I strive to create spaces where viewers can immerse themselves and engage with the artwork on a deeply personal level.
By presenting art as an invitation to explore and question, I hope to foster a sense of curiosity and introspection within each viewer. I want to challenge the status quo, disrupt preconceived notions, and encourage individuals to reflect on their own beliefs and experiences. In this process, I aim to facilitate a profound connection between the artwork, the viewer, and the larger cosmic forces that permeate our existence.
Additionally, I actively seek opportunities to engage with audiences through discussions, workshops, and collaborations. By creating spaces for dialogue and shared experiences, I hope to cultivate a sense of community and collective exploration. Through these interactions, I aim to bridge the gap between the artist and the viewer, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the creative process. Ultimately, my goal is to empower individuals to embrace their own creativity and tap into their innate capacity for wonder and imagination. I believe that by reconnecting with the magic of art, we can forge a stronger bond with ourselves, each other, and the world around us, thereby inspiring positive change and shaping a more vibrant future.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In the midst of ongoing discussions about the impact of AI and the future of work, I believe that society must recognize and actively support the invaluable contributions of artists and creatives. These individuals possess a unique set of skills that are essential for shaping a positive and harmonious coexistence with technology.
First and foremost, it is crucial for creatives to be actively engaged in the current discussions and decision-making processes surrounding technological advancements. Their perspectives and insights are vital in understanding the potential implications of these advancements on various aspects of society. By including artists and creatives, including traditionally marginalizd groups in these conversations, we can collectively develop a more holistic and thoughtful approach to the integration of technology into our lives. Furthermore, society should foster a culture that appreciates and values the ability to think outside the box. Creatives possess a natural inclination for innovative problem-solving and the ability to offer fresh perspectives on complex challenges. This mindset should be cultivated and encouraged from an early age, not only in educational systems but also in workplaces and communities.
To support artists and creatives, society should provide platforms and resources that allow for the exploration and expression of their ideas. This includes offering grants, family friendly residencies, and exhibition opportunities to help artists develop their craft and showcase their work. It also involves creating spaces and events that facilitate collaboration, networking, and the exchange of ideas among creatives.
Additionally, society should recognize the importance of lifelong learning for artists and creatives. The creative landscape is constantly evolving, and it is crucial for individuals in these fields to stay abreast of new technologies, techniques, and trends. Accessible and affordable educational opportunities, workshops, and mentorship programs can play a vital role in supporting their ongoing growth and development.
Finally, it is essential to foster an environment where artists and creatives are compensated fairly for their work. This includes establishing fair payment structures, copyright protection, and ensuring that their contributions are valued and recognized within society. By acknowledging the economic and cultural value that artists bring, we can create a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures and supports their creative endeavors. Society can best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem by actively involving them in discussions and decision-making processes, cultivating a culture of creative thinking, providing platforms and resources for expression, promoting lifelong learning, and ensuring fair compensation for their work. By embracing and championing the contributions of artists and creatives, we can collectively build a more vibrant, inclusive, and innovative society.
