We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lotoya Jean. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lotoya below.
Lotoya, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
My journey from idea to execution really started long before I understood what entrepreneurship truly meant. I was only 13 years old, sitting under a mango tree in Jamaica, selling and building my very first business. At that age, I didn’t have a business plan, mentors, or a deep understanding of structure.
I just had determination, creativity, and the belief that I could create something of my own.
In the beginning, it was all excitement and instinct. I focused on making money and finding customers, but I didn’t yet understand the systems behind a successful business. I had no knowledge of financial management, budgeting, bookkeeping, or proper business structure. I was operating purely on hustle and survival mode.
As the years went on, I started more businesses, but I kept running into the same problems. Money would come in, but I didn’t know how to manage it properly. I made decisions based on old money habits and unhealthy financial programming that I had never questioned before. Because of that, I lost not only my first business, but several others too.
At the time, those losses felt devastating. But looking back, that season became my greatest education.
I realized that having a great idea is not enough. Passion alone cannot sustain a business. I had to learn what happens behind the scenes of entrepreneurship, things like legal structure, financial literacy, systems, planning, pricing, credit, taxes, and mindset. I had to rebuild myself before I could rebuild a business successfully.
So the next phase of my journey became about learning. I invested time into understanding business structure and financial management. I studied how money works, how successful businesses operate, and how mindset affects decision-making. I had to unlearn survival thinking and develop habits that aligned with long-term success.
Once I gained that clarity, everything changed. I stopped simply trying to “make money” and started intentionally building businesses with structure, strategy, and sustainability.
That transformation led me to the work I do today.
Now, I help other women start and structure their businesses so they don’t have to learn everything the hard way like I did. I teach them how to master both mind and money because I know firsthand that entrepreneurship is not just about having a good idea. It’s about building the right foundation, developing financial discipline, and becoming the kind of person who can sustain success.
What started under a mango tree in Jamaica became the beginning of a much bigger purpose. My story is proof that even failed businesses can become stepping stones when you’re willing to learn, grow, and keep going.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am a Kingdom-driven entrepreneur, financial educator, business consultant, and mentor who is passionate about helping women transform both their mindset and their relationship with money. My journey into this work didn’t begin in a classroom or corporate office, it began through personal experience, failure, rebuilding, and discovering the power of combining faith, business strategy, and financial literacy.
I started my very first business at 13 years old under a mango tree in Jamaica. From an early age, I knew I had an entrepreneurial spirit, but I didn’t yet understand the systems needed to sustain a successful business. Over the years, I started and lost several businesses because I lacked proper business structure, financial management skills, and healthy money habits. Those experiences became the foundation for the work I do today because I understand firsthand what it feels like to have passion and vision but still struggle with execution, clarity, and financial stewardship.
Today, I am the founder of Kingdom Wealth Business Academy, where I help women, especially women of faith learn how to earn, manage, and multiply their money while building purposeful and profitable businesses rooted in Biblical principles; Kingdom Wealth.
What sets my work apart is that I don’t just teach business strategy or financial literacy in isolation. I focus on the whole person; mindset, faith, confidence, stewardship, healing from limiting beliefs, and building sustainable wealth with purpose.
I believe true wealth starts in the mind first. Many people don’t simply have a money problem, they have a mindset and structure problem. My goal is to help women break unhealthy financial cycles, develop confidence, and create systems that allow them to build generational wealth.
Through Kingdom Wealth Business Academy, I provide a variety of services and resources including one-on-one business consultations, group coaching and mentorship, debt repayment planning, financial education workshops and seminars, business development coaching, workshops, speaking engagements, books, The Bold Wealth Podcasts, and masterclasses such as the “Master Your Mind and Money”.
One of the biggest problems I solve for my clients is helping them move from confusion and survival mode into clarity, confidence, and intentional wealth-building. Many women come to me overwhelmed by debt, struggling with financial insecurity, lacking business direction, or battling fear and limiting beliefs around money and success.
I help them create structure, both mentally and financially so they can confidently pursue the vision God has placed inside of them.
I’m also deeply passionate about teaching that faith and wealth are not opposites. I believe financial stewardship is part of purpose, and that believers can build wealth while remaining aligned with their values and serving their communities.
Everything I teach is centered around empowering people to create impact, legacy, and freedom without compromising their faith.
One of the things I am most proud of is turning my own life experiences; including my failures, financial struggles, and lessons learned into tools that now help transform the lives of others. I’m proud that women are gaining confidence, starting businesses, improving their finances, changing their mindset, and believing in themselves again through the work we do together.
I also take pride in creating a safe and empowering space where women can grow personally, spiritually, and financially. My brand is not just about making money it’s about transformation, purpose, stewardship, and legacy. We do collective work in the Wealthy Minded Community.
More than anything, I want people to know that my work comes from a genuine place of service and lived experience. I don’t teach from theory alone. I teach from what I’ve walked through, overcome, and continue to learn. My mission is to help people understand that regardless of where they start, they have the ability to transform their lives, build wealth, and walk confidently in their God-given purpose.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The story of funding my business really began with faith, courage, and a decision to bet on myself even when the numbers didn’t make sense.
About eight years ago, I made the decision to step out on faith and pursue my vision of starting a tax consulting business. At the time, I didn’t have investors, business loans, or large savings. All I had was $2,597 from my 401(k) and a strong belief that I was supposed to build something greater for myself and my future.
Instead of waiting until everything looked perfect, I used that money to rent an office space and officially launch my business. I was excited, hopeful, and determined but the reality of entrepreneurship quickly hit me. In 2018, I only had five clients, and the business simply could not sustain itself financially. Cash flow became a major challenge, and eventually I had to make the painful decision to close the office and place my furniture and business equipment into storage.
That season was humbling. There were moments when I questioned myself, my decisions, and whether I should continue at all. But even during that difficult period, I knew quitting wasn’t an option.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
About a year later, I found myself searching for office space again, this time with only negative $5.87 in my bank account. Most people would probably see that as a stopping point, but for me it became another moment of choosing faith over fear. I had learned that entrepreneurship is not just about resources; it’s about resilience, vision, and the willingness to keep moving even when circumstances look impossible.
What changed everything was my mindset, my willingness to learn, and my commitment to building with structure instead of just survival. I began sharpening my business knowledge, strengthening my financial management skills, and becoming more intentional about how I operated. I stopped focusing only on immediate income and started building systems, relationships, strategy, and long-term sustainability.
Over time, things began to grow. Today, I have successfully opened several multi-six-figure businesses that have served hundreds of people. I also founded a nonprofit organization focused on teaching youth financial literacy and entrepreneurship education because I know firsthand how life-changing that knowledge can be. I want young people to have access to the tools, mindset, and education I wish I had earlier in my own journey.
Looking back, the most important lesson I learned is that funding a business is not always about having large amounts of money upfront. Sometimes it starts with taking the first step with what you already have, being resourceful, staying consistent, and having the courage to keep going after setbacks.
My story is proof that your current circumstances do not determine your future success. I started with faith, a vision, and less than $3,000 and even after experiencing failure, setbacks, and moments of having almost nothing in my account, I continued building. That persistence ultimately became the foundation for everything I’ve been able to create today.
