Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lost River. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Lost, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Well, my most meaningful work is “Lost River”, my acoustic project. The idea for this album has been in my mind for such a long time too…it almost feels like a distillation process. Everything I’ve learned (or unlearned) about life and music, applied with no compromises. What’s also interesting is that it’s essentially coming back to where I started, at the very beginning, as a kid with an acoustic guitar making simple music.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
I’ve been writing and producing music here in Montreal for the past 20+ years and started this project about 3 years ago. What I’m trying to do is best described as the words I put down on my Instagram bio: “life and light, warmth and wisdom”. – We start out in life innocently happy, and it’s very easy to become cynical and angry over the years, but the next step I think is appreciation and gratefulness. Of course it’s always easier said than done but quite simply, it’s where I want to be and it’s what I want to broadcast.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In my experience, music has taken everything I have for years (time, energy, ressources) and has given very little back. Of course we get payoffs like enthusiasm/enjoyment and everything, but obviously the music “business” is broken. Some of us have no choice but to keep at it though, doing what feels right. Just the fact that I’m still here doing this is a testament to my resilience lol.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Definitely. It makes no sense to most people to see you hacking away at some “idea” for years and years. Even the people closest to you will try to discourage you a hundred times – not to mention people that don’t have your best interest in mind. The key is to see that they can never understand your own experience of life – how YOU experience life… – There is a clear, well-defined path for dentists or lawyers but as an artist you kind of have to find your own way. Actually, this is the basic idea behind the name “Lost River” too: the river can meander through the land in a seemingly chaotic way, but beyond appearances it has a driving force. It may appear to be but it is never lost. It’s only lost to the people who can’t find it.
