We were lucky to catch up with Lost Lyrics recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lost thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
I want people to remember on how I made them feel. I believe impacting people in a positive way by being yourself surpasses any superficial offering you can make to attract people. What’s success if you can’t recognize who you truly are? I want my story to bring comfort to people and to send a message that each and every one of us has a gift that can never be duplicated. That our value doesn’t stem from what’s outside of us rather it stems from our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Success cannot be pursued itself, but rather attracted by the pursuit you make towards yourself to become a better person.
So, whenever I pass away, I want people to remember my work providing an energy that encourages others to be authentic and at peace. A place where they don’t feel judged, rather embraced. An energy where people can connect with one another on a deeper level.
Life is a song, you may get lost in the lyrics, but you can always adjust the chorus to make the song.
So basically, don’t get too caught up by the details of life, rather realize it’s all part of a bigger picture.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Yonas Berhe, aka Lost Lyrics. I was born and raised in Houston Texas. My parents left Eritrea during the independence war to provide a better life for myself and my older brother. I’ve started my creative path in the music industry by writing. In 2002, I started to listen to Eminem and fell in love with his word play. So, from 4th grade, I would try to memorize his lyrics and word play structures and use that to create my own songs/poems. I took it seriously and recorded my first song in high school and I couldn’t stop writing ever since. The name, Lost Lyrics, came from a notebook where I would write explicit, dark lyrics, as a personal escape. One day, my parents found the notebook and decided to throw it away as it was a distraction from my academics. I gave myself the name of “Lost Lyrics” as a dedication to the lyrics that were lost. Years go by, I would write and record music as hobby. It started off with hip-hop and then transitioned into alternative music. At the end of 2018, I decided to drive my car to LA to pursue music. I lived in my car for 4 months while working as a security guard. While I continued writing music in my car, I decided to make a video imitating my parent’s foreign accent and that blew up online. As I continued content creating, my main intention was to use comedy as a leverage to meet people in the music industry. In 2019, I started doing stand up for a bit and then went back to music. As I made a name within the Eritrean and Ethiopian community, I noticed how important my influence was, so I started putting more focus on mental health and used comedy and music as a healing source. My slogan for comedy was “Turning Trauma into Drama”. Once the covid pandemic happened, I dug deeper into content creation and started doing matchmaking Instagram lives for entertainment. That took an unexpected turn as it gathered an average of 3000-5000 viewers at one time. I decided to take a break from my brand and went back to school. I took over 100+ Hours in 2 years and eventually received my bachelor’s degree in marketing. I currently work in the consulting industry. So, to sum everything up; I create content that aligns with comedy and music. An accomplishment I’m very proud about is my single “Get Back” making the Recording Academy Grammy University playlist on Spotify! I am returning back to my brand this fall in 2023 so expect more comedy videos and music to be released!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to give East Africa the same recognition that West Africa has received. We are still very early, but I believe it’s very possible.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2020, I decided to take a break from my creative arts and focus on getting my degree. Setting down my creative passions made me access a different part of myself. As I am getting back into creating Fall 2023, I am very grateful for stepping away a bit,
