We recently connected with Loser Company and have shared our conversation below.
Loser, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
There was always loud music playing in my house growing up. Everything from the Beatles to the Doobie Brothers. My parents weren’t musicians but they had great taste in music and that gave me a solid foundation. I always had the freedom to be myself so I listened to a wide variety of music. When I got a bit older, I begged my mom to let me purchase a drum kit with the money I had saved. When she finally agreed, I took over the garage and started my first band. I don’t think I’d be a musician today without their patience and support. – Shawn
Loser, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Two of us – Will and Mas – started making music together while we were growing up in Michigan. Years and years later, we crossed paths again in California. We’d both been on different paths and had been through difficult, painful journeys along the way. We reconnected again over the shared sense of purpose and passion we felt in those early basement music sessions as kids, and so Loser Company was born.
By another fateful stroke of luck, we met Shawn in a bar in Los Angeles – he’d just gone through some challenging times of his own, and was reconsidering his own sense of purpose and joy in life. Before we knew it, the three of us were writing music through the ups and downs of our lives – leaning on these songs to help us process, grieve, and find joy and community through it all.
What we’re proudest of is writing the kind of music that helps people feel seen, whether they’re in the depths of their sadness or enjoying the moments when times are good.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
We write, record and play music because we love it. There’s something about connecting through sound and vibration that gives you a feeling you can’t get anywhere else. It’s really the best high there is. This is our way of building community and inviting others in. We’re fueled by the listeners we have gotten to connect with as a result. When you get a message from a fan telling you how much your music means to them or that it got them through a really tough time, it makes it that much more worth it.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The music business has been a long road for us. The three of us have been in multiple bands and have held various horrible day jobs over the years. You almost need the perfect storm to be successful in the music industry, but if you hang in there and keep showing up, your music will connect with somebody who needs to hear it eventually, and hopefully you’ll see some success.
Loser Company started about two years prior to the pandemic. At the time, we were playing shows locally and starting to feel like we were finally moving forward when everything shut down. We could have seen this as a closed door, but in true Loser Company tradition, we realized sometimes it takes losing something to push you in a new direction. With the lack of live shows, we picked another path to keep our dreams alive while everything was shut down, and focused on writing new music instead.
As a result, we ended up with The Floor, an album we’re so proud to have gotten to make. It’s because of this new music that we’ve gotten to lean on and learn from our amazing support system and some incredible fellow Los Angeles musicians. We could never have gotten where we are today if we stayed focused on that closed door.
