Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Loryn Dave. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Loryn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. The first dollar you earn is always exciting – it’s like the start of a new chapter and so we’d love to hear about the first time you sold or generated revenue from your creative work?
My first customer was from someone who found me on social media! I was so excited because they ordered multiple handmade things and there was someone who actually liked my work enough to spend their hard earned money. Support means so much to me. On the other hand I was anxious because I always want things to be perfect and produce quality work.

Loryn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have always been creative and loved making clothes. I use to buy clothes in high school and cut them up or sew them into something new. Then I went to Ohio State university and studied fashion and retail which grew my passion even more. My biggest take away from my time at school was how fast fashion is ruining or planet and the poor ethics and labor that goes into that. I knew I wanted to enter the industry in the most ethical and sustainable way. While trying to figure out how I wanted to enter the industry, the pandemic happened and I was furloughed from my retail job. While in lock down I felt it was the perfect time to learn a new hobby and I started learning to crochet. On top of creating cool things, crocheting was really peaceful and relaxing.
Outside of crocheting I took on up-cycling. I really love the idea of taking something old and creating something new or even keeping it the same because fashion is forever making a comeback.
I pride myself on making quality one of a kind pieces and providing great customer service to all. I love making people feel and look good. Fashion is the best way to express yourself!

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
One thing I feel like some might not understand is when things are trending and people are willing to pay anything for it and you know the time and the item is not worth it for the customer and yourself. Sometimes the fabric or the yarn is not a long lasting yarn and with my pieces I want them to last for a long time.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best thing society can do is support artist and not buy knock offs because they are cheap. Not only are you missing out on supporting small you are cheating yourself because I can guarantee the quality of the cheap item is no where near as good as the quality of the artist. I understand sometimes things are expensive, so supporting in other ways is always valuable. Share their work!
