We were lucky to catch up with Lory Hagopian recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lory, appreciate you joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?
I had the opportunity to intern at an outstanding advertising firm. The creative director invited me for a meeting and directed me to browse through a Pantone color guide, an essential book for color matching. He navigated to the section dedicated to browns and challenged me to identify each shade. “Copper, Mahogany, Tan, Black…” He abruptly instructed me to halt when I reached “Black,” exclaiming, “Yes, Black, just the way I like my coffee every morning.” My heart sank, but to my relief, he burst into laughter. He shared that he experienced a similar moment during his internship and vowed to ensure no one else endured the same. He dedicated an hour each day to mentor me, embodying what I believe is the hallmark of an exceptional boss: a willingness to educate.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Growing up, magazines were my window to celebrity and fashion worlds, but it was the ads that truly fascinated me. Their creative storytelling seemed to whisper that design and advertising were my calling. Fast forward, after years of refining my craft with wonderful clients, I’ve launched my website. It’s a special place where I showcase my design portfolio and offer my design services, excited to share my passion with you.
In providing branding and design solutions, I offer more than just visually appealing designs. My work is about crafting narratives that captivate and immerse the audience, guiding them through a journey to uncover challenges and discover solutions. This technique of vibrant storytelling is what distinguishes me as a Visual Storyteller, ensuring that each project is not just seen, but felt and remembered.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
When I think back on my creative path, there’s one golden nugget I wish I’d grabbed onto sooner: just how key it is to really get my target audience. After all, I’m creating for them! It’s been a game-changer to put their needs, likes, and lives at the heart of what I do. Now, I see diving into their world as a must-do, not just a nice-to-have. It shapes everything I create, making sure it hits the mark and truly connects. If I’d known this from the get-go, my design work would have been on another level right from the start. Live and learn, right? And I’m super excited to keep learning and designing with my audience in mind.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Imagine taking a simple idea and turning it into something visually stunning that grabs people’s hearts and minds. It’s like, one day, I’m brainstorming over a cup of coffee, and the next, my designs are out there in the world making someone smile or think differently. It’s all about connecting, you know? And the best part is, design is always moving, always evolving. Every project is a fresh start, a new story to tell. It keeps me on my toes, constantly learning and playing with new ideas. There’s this amazing feeling when you see your work making an impact, like you’re part of something bigger. It’s not just about the pretty pictures; it’s about crafting messages that resonate. And getting to do that, to really touch lives with my designs, is just the coolest thing ever.
