We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lorna Murdock. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lorna below.
Lorna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
1. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It all started with a mission to connect with my daughter, who was diagnosed with autism in 1999. After spending countless hours searching for resources that missed the mark, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I started creating learning tools using her interests, which finally broke through to her. That breakthrough was the lightbulb moment. Seeing her engage was all the inspiration I needed to continue.
2. Can you paint a picture for us so we understand the context and emotions involved?
As a fan of the Golden Girls, Picture this: countless days spent at the library, nights spent in front of the computer, feeling the weight of frustration from not finding what my daughter needed. The breakthrough came unexpectedly, one of those quiet, magical moments when everything clicked. I wish it were that simple; not everything clicked, but she was no longer staring into space, which meant the world to me. She began asking a question or two, showing some curiosity, and engaging a little more with the world. A mix of relief, joy, and a profound sense of parental duty drove me from then on.
3. How did you know this was a worthwhile endeavor?
Four years ago, I walked away from a job in information technology that I loved and started Adulting on the Spectrum (https://adultingonthespectrum.com/). I knew my efforts were worth it because my daughter is an amazing young woman who sees the best in others. She is the owner of two microbusinesses, Alecx Bundt Cakes (https://alecxbundtcakes.com/) and Art by Alecx (https://artbyalecx.com/), and I am so grateful to be a part of her story. For me, the logic is simple: if these tools could change her life, they could change the lives of others. The positive feedback from other parents and teachers continues to fuel my resolve.
4. Were you solving a problem that no one else was solving?
Absolutely. While some resources were available, there was a significant gap in materials designed for teens and adults with special needs, especially those tailored to foster independence. Most resources tapered off after childhood, leaving a void during a critical transition into adulthood. My focus is filling this gap and providing ongoing support where it was sorely lacking.
5. Were you offering a unique approach or what about this idea got you most excited?
The unique approach I brought was the love and dedication of a mother who was out of options. What excites me most is seeing the real-world impact of Adulting on the Spectrum life skills resources. From teaching practical skills like budgeting and job preparation to ensuring online safety and social savvy, these resources empower teens and young adults to tackle everyday challenges confidently. Every time a young adult gains a new measure of independence, it reaffirms the value of Adulting on the Spectrum (https://adultingonthespectrum.com/).
Have you ever had to pivot?
One of the most significant pivots in my life came when I decided to leave behind everything familiar in South Florida: my long-term job of 19 years, our family home, and the proximity to most of my family. I moved to Jacksonville, driven purely by the need to support my daughter’s independence and professional aspirations. Entering what felt like a new world was daunting, but this pivot was crucial. It meant I could fully dedicate myself to developing resources to support my daughter and other young adults on the autism spectrum. This change opened a new chapter where I could channel my energy and passion into making a tangible difference.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Passion is the heart of any successful venture, and it has been the cornerstone of mine. My deep, personal investment in the mission of Adulting on the Spectrum shines through in every resource. This genuine commitment resonates with parents, educators, and therapists.
