We were lucky to catch up with Lorin Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lorin , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
In 2016, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease and this rocked my world. For those of you who don’t know what Celiac Disease is, it’s and autoimmune disease that targets the lining of the small intestine. Your small intestine has a LOT of jobs that lead to all of your other systems functioning properly and when its damaged, all other systems start failing to operate correctly. Eating a gluten free diet it the only “cure” for this diesase at this time. By removing gluten from my diet, my intestines started to heal and I finally started getting better. I started sharing my experice online because it’s a rising autoimmune condition and doctors offices are not giving patients education enough to thrive after this life changing diagnosis.
After 2 years of doing so much trial and error and making lots of painful mistakes, I started a 1:1 gluten free lifestyle consulting business which has now grown into an events businesss and education podcast along with all the things i continue to share on my social media platforms.
It has brought so much light and hope to people lives, including my own. The community i have found online has been the greatest joy that this diagnosis has brought me.
Lorin , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My brand is all about education and teaching skills for self advocacy. Most clients I work with come into a call looking like a deer in the headlights and feel extremely overwhelmed by this massive change that has to be made. I do my best to ease their stress and teach them what their doctor never did, how to actually live a full-filling life after Celiac Disease. With my help, it is absolutely possible!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started my career as a 1:1 consultant in 2018, before chatgpt and AI. In this last year I have not had near as many 1:1 clients because they can use AI to get answers. I know that AI can’t teach real life experiences so I still make content surrounding my personal mistakes and growing experiences. I also had to pivot by making online e-courses because I have learned that people like to go at their own pace.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
6 years into my gluten free journey and career, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. This rocked my work, AGAIN.
I had learned over the years that many celiac patients also have type 1 so I know i could add this type of content on my platform and reach more people looking for that community. I am a glass half full gal and didn’t let this bring me down too bad. It took me time to figure out this new way of life but by sharing it online, I grew my community even more and gained so may great friendships because of it.
