We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lori Sitterding. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lori below.
Lori, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Two years ago, I covered the healthcare worker protests. During covid, a time when you would think we needed our healthcare workers most, they were being fired at an alarming rate if they decided against getting vaccinated. People who dedicated years of hard work, sacrifice and schooling were honestly being shunned.
That really resonated with me, being in home healthcare for 15 1/2 years. We do the jobs that a lot of people don’t want to. Or don’t have the capacity to. So if there is this pandemic then why do we lose our rights as humans? Our bodily autonomy? I thought. There was this recently concocted cocktail of nobody knew what, fast tracked by the FDA that everyone was supposed to just ignore all prior knowledge about their own sensitivities and take. What do we know the FDA approves? OxyContin for one..which fueled our opioid epidemic. People were well within their rights to question this and turn it down without losing their livelihoods over it.
Lori, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I always enjoyed photography. My dad was also a hobby photographer. He worked all around the world and I really loved seeing the photos from his travels. Once we moved from New York to California, everything seemed picturesque to me. We both loved the beach.
Unfortunately, in 2011 he was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma that had spread to his brain and he went downhill very fast. In some of his last lucid moments he kept telling me he wanted to go to the beach but couldn’t. So, I decided to purchase my professional gear and go to his favorite spots to take photos for him. Regrettably, I was too late. With that, I started Sitterding Photography.
I’ve shot everything from landscapes to portraits, small business and events. I enjoy creating light art and surrealism photos. I’m now where I think I’m meant to be which is in freelance and editorial. I love covering topics that I am passionate about and I’m proud to say that I am 100% self taught.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
A big part of what I do is advocate. If my photography can help shed light where it’s needed or on some major discrepancy, then I would consider that a mission accomplished.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I’m actually pivoting a bit right now. I recently got my certificate in catering for a business venture I hope to start very soon. I’ve always loved cooking and have something in the works. So, definitely follow my journey on Instagram.
