We were lucky to catch up with Lori Sapio recently and have shared our conversation below.
Lori , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Is there a historical figure you look up to? Who are they and what lessons or values have you learned from them?
A historical figure I look up to is Arnold Newman. I first met him when I was 19, during a weekend workshop he hosted in Rhode Island. His knowledge, patience, energy, and insightful critiques were truly life-changing. That weekend cemented my commitment to pursue photography—a passion I had developed six years earlier.
Newman is often credited as the photographer who pioneered environmental portraiture. He had an uncanny ability to capture iconic images of powerful figures, yet he always gave his undivided attention to those in his presence. That workshop transformed my approach; I absorbed an immense amount in just three days. Newman is undoubtedly one of the true Masters of Photography, and I feel deeply fortunate to have known him.
Lori , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The Story of Lori Sapio
Sometimes, there is nothing more captivating than the raw beauty of unposed laughter and genuine moments of love.
As a teenager, I stumbled into the world of photography, instantly enchanted, and it quickly became my life’s passion. Over the past 30+ years, I’ve had the privilege to work across a range of disciplines—from fashion and fine art to corporate and family photography—and my journey has been profoundly shaped by opportunities to collaborate with legendary photographers and work with world-class clients.
My approach is a mix of professionalism, creativity, and dedication to capturing the essence of every subject. Whether it’s a corporate project, a personal family session, or a high-stakes fashion shoot, I strive to bring out authentic moments and leave clients with memories and images they’ll cherish.
Family and Corporate Photography
The arrival of my own children introduced me to the vibrant world of family photography, leading me to capture newborns, children, and families in ways that feel timeless. I’m equally passionate about helping businesses create powerful visuals, from personal branding to headshots and lifestyle imagery for large campaigns. My clients include names like American Express, McDonald’s, Nordstrom, Equinox, Portillo’s, and Fresh Thyme, where I’ve collaborated to bring their brand stories to life through the lens.
A Creative Director with an Eye for Team Building
Beyond photography, I bring a unique talent for assembling creative teams tailored to each client’s needs. From stylists and designers to hair and makeup artists, I work to ensure that every project is executed flawlessly. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in creating standout visuals for my clients and publications alike.
A Journey of Learning and Growth
Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, I started my journey capturing the beauty of architecture before receiving my BFA in photography from Northern Illinois University in 1997. Mentorships with icons like Richard Avedon, Arnold Newman, and Nan Goldin significantly influenced my style, blending artistry with storytelling. Since then, my work has been featured in top publications such as Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, GQ, People, WWD, and the Chicago Tribune, showcasing my versatility and commitment to high-impact imagery.
Locations and Availability
With studios in Chicago’s River North and Dallas, I’m available for both in-studio and on-location shoots and am open to travel assignments. Each project is an opportunity to create something unique, and I’m excited to bring your vision to life, wherever that may take us.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The core mission driving my creative journey is to capture the genuine essence of every subject and to tell their story in a way that feels timeless and authentic. I’m passionate about creating images that evoke real emotion and leave a lasting impression. This means capturing unguarded, unposed moments—whether it’s in a high-fashion shoot, a family portrait, or a brand campaign.
Additionally, I aim to create spaces where clients feel seen, valued, and confident, which allows their true selves to shine through in the final images. Ultimately, my goal is to blend artistry with storytelling, preserving moments in a way that honors each client’s unique narrative and brings their vision to life.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Building my reputation within my market has been a blend of dedication, versatility, and a commitment to authenticity in every project. Early on, I sought out mentorship with photography icons like Richard Avedon and Arnold Newman, which taught me the importance of technical skill, creative vision, and working seamlessly with clients and teams.
My experience across diverse fields—fashion, fine art, family, and corporate photography—has allowed me to offer a wide range of expertise to clients while ensuring each project feels uniquely tailored. I believe what really sets me apart is my ability to create a comfortable, collaborative environment, bringing together top-tier teams of stylists, designers, and artists, to consistently produce stunning, impactful images. Above all, I strive to make each shoot an authentic experience, capturing true moments and emotions, which clients value and remember. This dedication to creating meaningful work has resonated, helping to solidify my reputation both locally and internationally.
