We recently connected with Lori Murphy and have shared our conversation below.
Lori, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Unemployment can sometimes be a blessing in disguise. After losing my desk job and finding it hard to get another one, I turned to exercise for both its mental and physical benefits. I was amazed at what I discovered. I was still unemployed, but my attitude changed, my energy increased, and I found myself loving the “new me.” A healthy lifestyle has its own rewards, and I had just discovered them. With these changes came a desire to share with others my experiences. The name Because You Can Fitness came from a dance instructor I had. She, a cancer survivor, would encourage her students to do the best they could, because they could. I’ve always taken her words to heart, so I dedicated the name of the business to her.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
While unemployed, I couldn’t use the “I don’t have time” excuse and not exercise or engage in physical activities. Wasn’t how I wanted to have the time, but I decided I’d take full advantage of it. I found that getting in my workouts, especially outdoors, helped not only with my physical well being, but also my mental well being. Being unemployed will certainly stress you out and this was a great way to lessen the stress. I started to envision helping others who may be going through their own stresses, and wonder if this would be a great new employment to pursue. Because You Can Fitness started small, and as a part time gig. I landed a great office position in order to keep finances and benefits in order. During the first 11 years of my business, I taught classes, and took on a few clients whenever I could fit them in my schedule. Then, after going part time with the office job for a couple of years, I took a leap of faith and went full time with my business. It was scary, but so worth it! The training I have done, both as a trainer and instructor, has been extremely rewarding! I am proud of everyone that I have worked with and those I continue to work with. Many, are not only clients, but have become friends. The fitness plans that I put together for my clients are individualized, because I believe you need to listen to each person and what their needs are. It’s not a “one size fits all”. I want everyone to get the most out of our work together.
The funniest thing that I tell people when I first meet them and start telling them about myself, is that I was not an athlete growing up. I was the kid that tried to get out of many phys-ed classes. I started getting active as a young adult, but it took me several years to reach where I am today. If I can transform, so can they.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Although my business is small, I’ve grown my clientele by being open, honest and adaptive. I am aware that people have many options when it comes to. the fitness industry. I try and make sure clients have various ways to work with me. In person, at a gym facility, outdoors, and online. I try and go above and beyond to give them everything they need to be successful in their journey. I offer free assessments, and first classes. This way someone can get a feel for how I work before committing. Each person has their own reason for starting a fitness journey and I want to make them feel that they have made the best choice in working together.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I keep in touch with my clients on a weekly basis. Not only to confirm appointments, but on.a personal level. Checking in to see how they are doing, asking if there is anything they need from me. The longer I work with someone, the more I find out what’s going n in their daily lives This helps me understand more of what they might need from their workouts.
I also check in with former clients occasionally. I find texting and emails are a great way to keep in touch.
