We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lori Morrison. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lori below.
Alright, Lori thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with talking about how you serve the underserved, because in our view this is one of the most important things the small business community does for society – by serving those who the giant corporations ignore, small business helps create a more inclusive and just world for all of us.
Victims of crime and their families are often retraumatized by what they have to go through to get justice. Friends may abandon them, online trolls harass them, and the legal system requires them to relive what they’ve gone through over and over again in front of strangers. Their stories need to be told, and people need to be made aware of resources available to them.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
As a life-long true crime fan, I became consumed with a local case of a missing young woman who was about the same age as my oldest daughter. Seeing news accounts interviewing her distraught family made me wonder what I would do if that happened to one of my daughters. Who would help me? After volunteering to help the investigator who had worked that case, I eventually became a licensed private investigator myself.
Because I quickly learned how much help family of missing and murdered loved ones need, my goal is to encourage and equip people who long to be a different kind of P.I. – a Person of Impact. Each of us is already uniquely gifted to serve our communities in simple ways that make a difference.
I innovate unique approaches to difficult issues
I value integrity in my work
I am passionate about justice
I encourage others to embrace faith over fear
I equip people who are ready to get out of the audience and into the action
I help people who want to know how to keep themselves, their families, and their communities safer in a chaotic world.
The need is so great that I felt compelled to create content to empower all of us to take a short, three step journey to:
1. increase our own personal safety
2. protect the ones we love, and
3. serve the vulnerable and overlooked members of our communities.
I host a weekly podcast focusing on lessons we can learn through true crime stories, and use my social media presence to educate, entertain, and empower people who long to help keep their communities safer but don’t feel confident that they know what to do. That’s also why I wrote and released my book “How to Kick Fear to the Curb”.
How did you build your audience on social media?
As I tried to build an audience on social media, I read as much as I could and was shocked to find “experts” giving contradictory advice! I tried following people hoping they would follow me back. I obsessed over finding the best hashtags to reach as many people as I could. I encouraged people who listened to my podcast to follow me. Each of those ideas worked to a limited degree. A very limited degree. Over time, I learned that when you give people information or advice that they really need, they will share with their friends and that is how you grow an audience of people who really value what you do.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Very early in my career as a private investigator, I met a woman at a conference who had a missing family member. She’d been going from conference to conference, event to event in the hopes she could find someone who could help find her missing loved one. I was struck by how many people like her there must be, and how all of the private investigators out there wouldn’t have enough resources to give them the emotional support they need. I knew then that I wanted to use the gifts and passions that God gave me to encourage others that they have the ability to take small actions that would make a huge difference in these family’s lives.
