We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lori Mirabelli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lori, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Graduating from university in 2007, my path seemingly veered into the mundane. It was not until 2008 that I began to notice the whispering call of an alternative life; it was a year of nurturing my innate love for creativity, when I first dipped my toes into the vast, vibrant ocean of abstract art. As I explored this unchartered territory, I found myself magnetized towards art’s expressive freedom. Gradually, my commitment to my artistic pursuits stepped out of the shadows of a hobby and edged its way into the beating heart of my daily life. However, the anchor of practicality still chained me to my desk job, a toll to sustain my inspiration-fueled ambitions. My fervor grew over years, painting a stark contrast to the monochromatic scenes of my office job. It was in the whirlwind year of 2020 when the tumbling scales finally revealed the full weight of passion against secure monotony. Ripe with resolve, I chose the ineffable brilliance of a creative life, leaving behind the dull sheen of a desk job to embrace my artistic journey. Now as a full-time abstract artist, I’m walking the winding, enthralling paths of vivid dreams and reality, courageously challenging the canvas with strokes of ambition and freedom.

Lori, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
After graduating in 2007, my life took a seemingly conventional turn. However, in the following year, the lure of the abstract and the creative began to whisper in my ears. It was during these months that I found myself venturing into the realm of abstract art, welcomed by the language of forms, shapes, and colors. I decided it was time to voice my thoughts, my emotions, not in alphabets but through the vibration of my brush dipped in vibrant acrylic paints.
My artistic pursuit started as an exercise on the side of my regular desk job, a creative asylum. My chosen playground was the boundless canvas where I would let my brush dance to the song in my heart, giving rise to lyrical abstractions. My personal style, each stroke, an echo of melody, set my work apart from the crowd.
The rigid structure of an office seemed to be in constant conflict with my free-spirited artistry. The gray hues of monotony in 2020 finally pushed me towards a spectrum of colorful dreams. It was then that I realized my true calling and plunged full-time into the world of abstract art, abandoning the safety of my desk job.
Each day since has been a testament to my evolution and growth as an artist. Every year, with each new collection, you can trace my journey, the shifts, the refinement, the maturation. From my early canvases in 2008 to the present-day creations, you can see the trial and triumphs etched in every line, daubed in every shade of acrylic paint.
As a full-time abstract artist, my goal remains steadfast – to evolve, to stretch beyond the realms of the known into the thrilling unknown. This desire to grow and continually improve is reflected in every single piece I create. And it’s this journey, this constant pursuit of artistic growth, which I hope resonates with my clients. I continue with the hope of one day becoming a recognized name in the abstract art world, my vibrant canvases a testament to a journey well explored.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Embarking on my journey as an abstract artist, I recognized the crucial role that social media could play as a career marketing tool. I sought to make my art visible, familiar, and eventually loved by potential buyers and collectors, understanding that this required unwavering dedication. As such, I adopted a regimented approach to growing my social media, posting art daily without fail for around two and a half years, often multiple times per day. This unfaltering consistency allowed me to expose my work to the world, a relentless pursuit that was integral to my success.
Growing an audience on social media was more than just showcasing art; it was about authenticity and vulnerability. I made sure that my online presence was genuine, sharing not just the positives but also the struggles of being a full-time artist. I believe this honesty helped to paint a valuable picture of reality, one that resonated with people, leading to a more profound connection with my followers.
For anyone seeking to expand their social media presence, my key advice is consistency, authenticity, and patience. Regularly sharing your work is an important step. Equally as critical is showcasing your genuine self, offering insights into both the victories and hurdles of your journey. This approach can help build a more engaged follower base. Realize that building an audience isn’t an overnight process; it takes time. Stay patient and keep sharing your passion with the world.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a full-time abstract artist is the absolute liberty it brings. Each day in the studio unfurls differently, allowing me to flow with my creative instincts and set my own schedule. This flexibility also affords me the opportunity to vacation and visit with my friends in the Bahamas and live serenely in a rural setting. With my studio onsite, I’m grateful I don’t need to venture away from home to get to work. Each day brims with the promise of new creative expressions, making every moment exciting. My art exhibitions are not confined to a local audience; it extends to different vibrant cities like New York and California, with dreams stretching across the Atlantic to London and Denmark. As an artist this is not merely a profession, but a passion-filled journey I cherish.
