We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lori McNee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lori, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
For as long as I can remember, art has been a part of my life—I often say that I practically started with a pencil in hand! My entrepreneurial parents imparted a keen sense of business, which has been essential in managing the diverse aspects of my art career. I enjoy the artist’s lifestyle and the flexibility it provides. My life is intentionally designed around my passions for art, education, blogging, writing, producing, and more! Traveling internationally to lead painting workshops is one of the many aspects of my career that I find fulfilling and joyful. I am thankful for the life I have designed. While I am fulfilled in my artistic endeavors, I sometimes reflect on other paths I might have taken, like a career in marketing or advertising—a field ripe with creativity and strategy. These reflections, however, only deepen my appreciation for the path I’ve chosen.
Lori, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Certainly! I’m an American artist based the beautiful and inspiring mountains of central Idaho. My love for art began in childhood, drawing the wildlife around our Arizona home. In college I was frustrated with the lack of traditional techniques and training and I nearly abandoned art until becoming a mother reignited my passion, allowing me to weave art into my daily life. My work has ranged from conservation illustrations to studio landscapes, still life, encaustic wax and wildlife art.
Currently, I am honored to be a Signature Member Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society, an juried member of the California Art Club, and a Master Artist in Cobra Water-mixable Oil Paints, emphasizing sustainable art practices. I’m also an artist ambassador for Royal Talens, Fredrix Canvas and others.
In 2009, I embraced the digital world with my popular art blog, FineArtTips.com, where I share insights and business advice. As an early adopter of social media, I became known as an online branding expert, and influencer which offered unique opportunities, such as covering major media events including the Golden Globes, Emmys. During this time I was ranked among the Top 100 Women on Twitter which led to features in publications like The Wall Street Journal and Huffington Post. However, I ultimately had to make a choice and decided to refocus on my core passion—art and education—prioritizing creating, teaching, and family.
Through my book, DVDs, online courses, and workshops, I strive to enrich others’ artistic journeys. My life is a balance of creating in my art studios, tending the family farm, enjoying my grandchildren and nature, plus sharing my knowledge worldwide. I invite art enthusiasts to explore my work, blog and workshops at LoriMcNee.com / FineArtTips.com or my online courses art.LoriMcNee.com.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
As I previously mentioned, I began blogging in 2009 but quickly faced the challenge of attracting visitors. Discovering Twitter (now X) was transformative for my business approach. It offered a platform to share my posts and engage with a broader audience, marking a significant shift in my understanding of social media’s potential for business and brand promotion.
Over the years, I’ve coached hundreds of artists on the importance of brand recognition and establishing a strong social media presence. A key strategy was using ‘artist’ in my handle, @lorimcneeartist, to ensure instant connection within the art community. Consistency has been vital—I used the same profile picture across all platforms, which featured me with my paintbrushes, reinforcing my brand identity as an artist, and aiding follower recognition. However, once you gain notoriety, you can break this rule.
Your bio is your virtual persona, a crucial space to make a lasting impression. It should thoughtfully reflect your unique identity and values. Identifying your niche and creating tailored content are fundamental. Share clear, appealing visuals that engage your audience and clearly communicate your message. These principles might seem basic, but they are effective!
The social media landscape is rapidly evolving, yet strategic planning, consistency, and authenticity remain key to developing a presence and cultivating a loyal following. Remember, like any endeavor, it takes time and dedication.
