We recently connected with Lori Maydwell and have shared our conversation below.
Lori, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me is the invaluable introduction to Master Chef Dorian Hunter. Her role as an inspirational guide and true friend has been a beacon of kindness in my creative journey. I’m profoundly honored that she graciously contributed the foreword for my upcoming cookbook, “I Love Lori’s Plant-Based Life.” This gesture not only reflects her appreciation for my work but also highlights the genuine camaraderie that can blossom in the world of creative entrepreneurship.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, I’m Lori Maydwell! I am a plant-based recipe creator, published author, and entrepreneur. I’m delighted to share that my first cookbook, “I Love Lori’s Plant-Based Life,” will be launching on February 14, 2024. My culinary journey is inspired by the simplicity of my childhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Living in Georgia, I’ve found inspiration in the southern surroundings, incorporating local ingredients into my recipes. As I navigate the world of plant-based cooking, I strive to create recipes that go beyond dietary labels, focusing on universal enjoyment.
My mission is to reach diverse audiences, especially those facing food insecurity, with nourishing, budget-friendly, and allergy-conscious recipes. For me, plant-based eating is not just a choice but an essential and accessible way of life.
In my spare time, I’m grateful to volunteer for various community events and organizations, including The National Consumer Panel, Emory Healthcare Patient Advisory Committee, Vegan Product Testers, and serving as a Voting Poll worker in my county. I’m humbled by the opportunity to share the joy of plant-based living with you!

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2022, I embarked on the exciting journey of creating and testing recipes for my cookbook, I Love Lori’s Plant Based Life. Before I could complete the final edits, life threw a significant curveball my way. On July 5, 2023, I was diagnosed with a PALB2 stage one, triple-negative, genetic breast cancer. This unexpected turn led me down a path of resilience, strength, and unwavering determination.
Facing a challenging treatment plan that included a bilateral mastectomy, oophorectomy, and chemotherapy, I encountered physical and emotional hurdles that continue to shape my journey today. In these trying times, the unwavering love and support from my mother, Alicia, my sister, Lisa, and my cherished friends became my anchor.
Throughout my recovery, my mother and sister played instrumental roles in my healing process. They not only provided invaluable emotional support but also stepped into the kitchen to prepare meals using the very recipes I had been working on. Their assistance was crucial in perfecting my creations and submitting them for professional editing before publishing.
Despite the ongoing challenges, I am thankful for the days when I feel good and can immerse myself in the kitchen—doing what I love most: creating healthy and nutritious plant-based recipes. This journey has taught me the true meaning of resilience, and I am grateful for the strength and inspiration drawn from those around me.
In the midst of my cooking journey, the personal challenges of breast cancer led me to establish Lori’s Breast Health Boutique. Drawing insights from both medical advice and shared experiences of friends and family, I felt compelled to offer essential information about self-care products pre and post-surgery.
Launched in November 2023, Lori’s Breast Health Boutique, available at https://lorisbreasthealthboutique.net/, stands as a compassionate haven for breast cancer survivors. My commitment is to create a caring space where crucial products for breast care and health are accessible to all. As a breast cancer survivor, my mission is deeply personal—to empower individuals, enabling them to take control of their breast health for a happy and healthy life.

How did you build your audience on social media?
In the early stages of my journey, I recognized the importance of establishing a strong presence on professional social media platforms to connect with my audience. I set up accounts dedicated to my plant-based recipes, sharing enticing photos and insights into my culinary creations.
Consistency became a key factor in building my social media following. I made it a habit to share photos of my recipes daily, engaging with my followers by responding to their questions and comments. Building a sense of community was crucial, and I actively followed and supported fellow home cooks and chefs, showcasing their incredible creations through reposts.
I quickly realized that establishing a successful brand played a pivotal role in attracting and retaining followers. Creating a cohesive and visually appealing presence helped convey the essence of my plant-based journey and resonated with those who shared similar interests.
For those starting to build their social media presence, my advice would be to focus on consistency, engagement, and authenticity. Share content regularly, engage with your audience genuinely, and let your unique voice shine through. Building a supportive community around your brand is not just about gaining followers but establishing meaningful connections that will contribute to the growth of your online presence.
