We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lori Judd a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lori, thanks for joining us today. What’s something crazy on unexpected that’s happened to you or your business
I was hired to declutter a home in Las Vegas. The family had a home in South Hampton and NYC and was buying a home in Beverly Hills. Once I was finished decluttering and organizing the home in Las Vegas the family sent me to South Hampton (selling this home) to organize and pack the home, find a moving company and start the process. The home sold in South Hampton and they asked me to have some of the items from South Hampton shipped to NYC and back to Vegas but in the meantime they purchase their Beverly Hills home and needed the rest of the items shipped to Beverly Hills. I then proceeded to jump on a private plane back to NYC meet the movers to receive the items in their NYC apartment, unpack them and organize their home. Once I was done with that I was asked to jump on another private jet, go to Beverly Hills, receive the items, unpack, and organize the home and get it ready for the family to come and have a party on the 4th of July. I got to Beverly Hills and the house was flooded, the car (Range Rover) was also delivered and had scratches on it. AND the moving truck could not park in front of the home because it was a tiny street on a hill so they had to hike with carts and dolly’s up and down the hill until the truck was empty. This was AFTER the plumbers had to come and fix the leak in the house so we could unload and get everything unpacked in 2 days for the 4th of July party. Well we did it. That was my intro into Move Manager Pro

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
There are many ways to receive clients, from social media to referral to cold called to networking. My success was through word of mouth, as well as my return business. I use a service called Thumbtack which really catapulted me to the next level. Now these clients are return clients and refer me to other clients. It is the circle of my life. Another great idea for business referrals is to become part of groups and associations that are in the same field that you are in. Add your information to their data base and you will be part of a nationwide association to where people look for services that you offer and you will receive the referral. Having a good website with key words sprinkled into your site will help the search engines also push you up hire into the eyes of the person looking for your type of services
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
My niche is Seniors. I work with them to declutter, organize, move and downsize them. Don’t get me wrong I have done a lot of “pro bono” work. But when I walk in a home where there is the most gorgeous items, and the customer is moving into one of the most prestigious senior homes and they say we don’t want to spend a lot of money, I call that the opening sequence. this is the start of a difficult customer and I usually will not take them on. The opening was the forcast for the rest of the project, the “gut” feeling so to speak. I have done several of these projects because, 1. I needed the work, 2. I don’t like to say no to seniors. But they always ended up wanted so much more of my time and services for nothing. Meaning I make nothing on the job. So always check your opening sequence, take the temperature of the customer, feel it, then make your decision.
